Hey guys. I just built a PC with an FX 8320 processor and I have a notebook with an Intel 4700MQ processor. The FX is clocked at around 3.5 while the Intel turbos up to about 3.4. This got me thinking, what exactly is the difference in performance between a desktop processor and a mobile processor that makes the desktop processor superior? I know the clock speed is irrelevant, esspecially when comparing AMD and Intel. Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it.

Way to completely ignore the original post! Well done you.

Mobile CPUs tend to be very different. As well as lower clock speeds they tend to have fewer cores and just generally more optimised to running off of a battery for an extended duration, and with low heat output. They are engineered for fundamentally different sets of requirements.

OP asked why the desktop CPU is superior, in this case it is not.

Even though its amd it still suprerior than mobile due to expansions and etc. And in the future you can seap out parts for intel cpus or new amd cpus. Plus the amd is better for multitasking and threaded games compared to the dual core i7 in the laptop

Remember a wise man once said, "You'll most likely hear/see more bad reviews from products than good, because if they get a good product, they won't bother to write a review, and if they got a bad product, they'll complain about the product" ~ SoftenButterCream

Well you actually didn't answer my question so.....

So is the core i7 that I have in my laptop which is actually quad core better than the AMD that I have in my desktop? Well that's a bit a simplistic question. The better question I suppose is what does the AMD exactly excel at and what are the perks of gaming on a desktop versus a laptop? I would think that desktops would have superior cooling.

The GPU.....You can fit a full size GPU into a desktop....laptop you're stuck with a mobile version, or onboard graphics.

for me

desktop: upgradability, better gaming on larger or multiple screens, and lots more.lol can't move around though for obvious reasons

laptop: mobility..i just hate that you have to worry about battery life..i just wouldn't game here

my 2cents  :)
