I feel like with the new graphics cards on the market it's time for an upgrade. I'm powering a dual monitor 1080p setup. My budget is around $1k.

Any recommendations? What would be the best bang for my buck option for a lasting new GPU?

Thanks

well You don't really NEED a new one, but if you are looking at that price I'd say go dual 970s, or if you can push your budget a bit triple 970s.

Although personally I'd say get dual 970s and put the extra money into a third screen

Single GPU? GTX 980.

If you want to use that full $1K? Get two 980s. (2x 980 can be had for about 1.1K USD)

for two 1080p monitors? I think dual 970s are the better bang for his buck and doesnt have to spend 75% of his money :P

For around a grand you could get a 295x2 and still have some money to spare. It's the fastest card you can get on a single pcb. Since you only have 16x pcie lanes you can potentially add another one for quadfire if you so desire.

Very true.

I am kinda disregarding what he says about "best bang for your buck", arent I? 2x 970s will run most modern games at 1080p more than fine, and even if he decides to go with 1440p in the future, games like BF4, Last Light, etc etc, still run at a great 70+ FPS.

Now, if he wanted to use all of his money in this (which is what I was going by), the best use of it would be the dual 980s. For a few reasons. You really wont want toi be looking at 3-way sli of anything:

1. To run 3-way SLI, you need a PLX or HEDT board to support 3-way SLI with z87/97. As Nvidia requires 8x for SLI. (He doesnt have that)

2. The scaling of 3-way sli isn't the best, and will differ from game to game.

3. More cards = more heat+power.

So, the two fastest single cards will be best to keep him going for a few years (until nvidia releases a new $300 card that kills two 980's in 2-3 years) are the 980's (or a couple 295s....).

Wait, are you gaming on both monitors or one for gaming and the other for stuff to be on it while gaming?

Single GTX 980 will be good for driving your panel. But suggest upgrading your display to a 1440p monitor.

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

well i never said he should 3-way SLI 970s, the performance increase is so little and heat and power consumption is so high it doesn't really justify the price imo.

Do you really think dual SLI 970s wont last 2-3 years? And why should he spend extra money on 980s if two 970s do the job just fine? Bragging rights? I wouldn't even dare but "futureproofing"? Besides, its always nice to save a few pennies :)

Sorry, sounds like my tone is coming across incorrectly in my posts. :(

I'm saying you are 100% correct. I'm not saying you said 3-way sli (Some people recommend it for some reason, and I wanted to mention the problems that may come up with that). I'm not even saying he SHOULD spend the full 1k, All I'm talking about, is if he WANTS to spend his full 1k budget, the best way to max out his budget would be with Dual 980s. Obviously, if he wants to save some cash, SLI 970's will be great, as you said. To sum up:

If he wants one GPU : 980

If he wants two GPU's: 970s

If he wants to max out his 1k budget: 2 980s

oh ywah now it makes sense :P

wouldn't two 980s be slightly over budget? Depending on the manufacturer anyways...
