My pc specs:

CPU: AMD Athlon X4 860k (95w)

GPU: Asus R7 260x OC Edition (115w)

PSU: EVGA 500w 80plus

3 Case fans, 2 led 120mm fans and 1 non-led 180mm fan

DVD disk drive

Internal led lighting

It gets approx. 50-65 watts at idle, and it jumps around 70watts to 150ish when at load. but mostly jumps around 130watts.

So, my question is if i upgrade my GPU to a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121840 (Asus R9 290x DC2OC) will my PSU be able to handle it?

Asking because my friend has a 290x with a 500w PSU but instead he has a x4 750k and has 1 less fan

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaah but you should really upgrade, especially if you're going to do a heavy OC.

From what I have seen the R9 290x has quite a high power draw on it, Have you thought about going for a Nvidia 970 instead? From what I have read recently it has a lower power draw...

But realistically, I think that it may run the R9 290X off that power supply. You may want to upgrade you PSU to something with a higher rating as it is on "80 plus"... maybe 80 plus silver or gold perhaps.

i had the athlon x4 760k overclocked, a 600w evga psu, and an r9 290 and i felt as though it was being pushed. so as @ZacDaMan72 said: yeaaaaaaah, but probably not a super good idea...the r9 290 are thirsty animals. most likely it will work, crash sometimes depending on if you over clock, and definitely degrade the psu.

if you do have that kinda money the gtx 970 would be better, other wise a r9 290 would be the way to go prise to performance since its about 100$ less then the gtx 970 but vary close to the 290x.

also fans don't make a huge difference power wise, if you need to remove a fan to have enough power for the system its time to upgrade the psu
