Hi guys, 1st topic on the forum for me.

I am planning to upgrade my current storage for my system (currently have 120gb ssd and 1tb hdd) to a 4x WD caviar red 3tb drive raid 10 array. I dont like running backups for such large ammounts of data so thats why i want to use raid 10 instead of raid 0 with backups. I am using a maximus v formula mobo and can probably only use the 4 asmedia sata III ports. Does anyone have any experience with raid setups on this board and is it possible or should i find another soultion?

Thanks in advance.

Hey man, welcome to the forums

hmm i haven't run a raid set up on a secondary sata controller before and looking at the specs on the asus website it isn't clear weather the asmedia controller supports raid at all... so id recommend testing a raid array with random drives you have lying around before spending the money buying 4 red drives.

if the question is whether the speeds would be good, i think the Intel/asmedia shouldn't bottleneck the hdd's in raid 10

so, if the set up doesn't work and you need to get a dedicated raid card id recommend running a raid 5 as it will still give you good performance and also more storage then raid 10. However, don't run a raid 5 on the maximus v controller unless your happy with slow speeds.

Hope i answered your question mate ;)

Thanks for replying. I dont actualy have any spare drives (only person with a desktop in my house) so it will be hard to test. Also would seagate barracuda drives work as good in a raid 10 array as WD caviar red drives, they are quite a bit cheaper at the moment at my local stores.

Yeah man, seagate barracuda are just as fast as red drives if not faster. However, the red drives are designed to last longer. e.g. less drive failures which is why they're typically used in raid arrays and more expensive...

Just depends on what you value more, cheaper storage vs less data loss

If you run a raid 10 array you could even use two barracuda's in raid 0 and two red's for the backups
