Hey guys. I'm planning on buying a Corsair AX 760 and I would also like to sleeve the cables, but I'm really a noob when it comes to sleeving. I want to order the sleeving stuff from MDPC-X since everyone says their sleeving is the best but I don't know what I need and how much I would need to individually sleeve every cable. Can you guys please tell me what do I need and how much?

First of all, you need to do some math ;) (Aw man!)

Find a good review, for example this one : http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/psu/48641-corsair-ax760-atx-power-supply/

What it says is : 24pin = 60cm. So sleeving every cable individually would be 24 * 61cm = 1464cm = 14,64m of sleeving (for just the 24 pin).

Then you go to the next cable and so on and so forth.

At the end, you should end up with approximately  70m of sleeving (most of the time when I sleeve 700+ Watt PSU's, I need about 70+ m). Also don't forget to add another 10-15%, so you have some spare sleeving if you mess up, or miscalculated.

Then for the heatshrink (if you want to use heatshrink ofcourse), you count every single pin. So, for the 24 pin, this is ofcourse 48 pieces of heatshrink.

I recommend to order the precut heatshrink, if you decide on using heatshrink. The price difference is so small, and this saves you alot of time and guarantees you a length of your heatshrink.

I hope this helps ;)

I had nothing to do, so I did the math for you ;)

But this doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. You should practise for the next time you need to order some sleeving.

The math I did:

24 pin : 24 * 61cm = 16,64m

2 * 8pin (EPS) : 2 * (8 * 65) = 10,40m

2 * 6+2pin (PCI-e) : 2 * (6 * 60) = 7,2m      Now why is this 6 * 60, and not 8 * 60? After all, this is an 8pin PCI-e cable. Well, if you watch the picture closely, you'll see that this particular cable is a 6+2pin where the 2pin connector is put inline with the 6 other cables. So there only are 6 full length cables and 2 small ones coming out of the connector itself, but still giving the full potential of a full 8pin cable.

2 * 8pin (PCI-e) : 2 * (8 * 75) = 12m

2 * SATA (5 cables) : 2 * (5 * 70) = 7m

1 * SATA : 5 * 85 = 4,25m

2 * Molex (4 cables) : 2 * (4 * 75) = 6m

2 * floppy (4 cables) : 2 * (4 * 10) = 0,8m      The website says 100cm, but the floppy cable is not 1m long, so I think they made a small mistake :p it's more of 10cm.

This brings us to a total of 64,29m. Now this is just enough to sleeve your entire PSU, leaving no margin of error. So add another 15% of sleeving to this amount.

This brings us to 74m of sleeving. Now this will be a safe amount to order. Now, I reckon thet MDPC only sells per 10m. So you either buy 70m or 80m. This totally depends on you. Do you want to 'take the risk' and go for 70m, leaving you 5m of extra cable to mess up, or do you want to play it safe and order 80m.

Now, to be honest, if you take your time for it and do it correctly, 70m will do.But if you are not really confident in yourself, than go for 80m.

Now do the math yourself and post the results ;)

Wow thanks a LOT dude. So the total from MDPC-X would be 107 euro (that's a bit more than what I initially expected :P). I'm now thinking, is it really worth it to sleeve the PSU myself with custom sleeving or should I just buy the sleeved cables from corsair which cost like $100? Or should I buy the OCZ Fatal1ty 1000w which costs $180 on Amazon ($20 more than the AX760) and already has sleeved cables (although I would like my cables to be red instead of black like in the OCZ PSU but it's not the end of the world :P )?

Well, if you like your cables in 1 color, than you could buy the corsair sleeved cables :).

But real modders and people who want their system to be sleek and perfect will never buy pre-sleeved cables. Corsairs sleeved cables are quite nice, but the heatshrink is way too long and they're not all the same size which makes your cables look unprofessional. Real modders will always sleeve their own cables so they are sure it's done the way they want it to be done.

By sleeving your own cables, you can also decide your own pattern. As I said before, if you only want your cables to be one color only, then you could go for pre-sleeved cables.

It's all about your personal taste and demands. If you want your own pattern, or if you want your heatshrink to be perfect and the way you want it to be, then sleeve them yourself.

If you don't mind about the heatshrink not being perfectly the same and don't mind about your calbes not being perfect, buy pre-sleeved cables ;).

Yeah I didn't like a lot the sleeving of the Corsair ones and they were pretty expensive so my real options are the OCZ psu or the Corsair AX760 with my sleeving. Guess I'll have to go with the Corsair option, even if it takes me a week lol, because they do look a lot better and the uber long heatshrink bothers me. Do you know if the flat ribbon cables from the AX760 make it any easier/harder to sleeve?

Guess I'll have to start saving some money because I want to upgrade a lot of stuff from my computer at the moment (case, psu, motherboard, memory and cpu), hopefully the money that I get from selling my Xbox will help haha

You could always use Paracord, it is way cheaper but from what I can tell it's a tad bit more difficult to work with. It's roughly 7.5 euros for 30 meters on amazon. My numbers may be slightly off, not entirely sure if my conversions are correct.

Yeah I guess it's a good option but the problem is most of the people that sell it don't have international shipping and since this would be purely for aesthetics then I would preffer waiting and saving some money so I can get the best option available. That's why I decided on getting the AX760 instead of the OCZ Fatal1ty 1000w because the sleeving on the OCZ psu doesn't look very good and since it doesn't give any performance increase I preffer saving some more money and doing it myself with the highest quality option.

If you don't mind waiting and saving the money then MDPC is definitely the way to go, I have seen a couple rigs in person that have it and it looks beautiful.

Swizzle is right. You could also go for paracord. Paracord is actually my personal favorite sleeving. It gives your rig and cables a more lifelike look instead of polyester MDPC sleeving. Not saying that MDPC isn't good, it's the best sleeving there is. You won't find anything else that has the same quality as MDPC. But I prefer paracord because I like the way it looks. And, ofcourse, it's way cheaper :) that's always a handy.

+1 for paracord sleeving. Very cheap, very easy to do, looks nice and a variety of colours to choose from.
I sleeved my entire HX750 and I think it cost me about £20 for all the cord, tools and lighters etc.
And that was my first sleeving project, very happy with it.

Go find some damaged power supply to practise first, before you start sleeving your expensive power supply

I'm now thinking about getting a ton of paracord so that I can practice sleeving on an old PSU. Do you guys know of any store that sells all the stuff and has shipping to Mexico?

EDIT:

Found this sleeving on FrozenCPU

I purchased my paracord from eBay (specifically from eBayID: bushcraftstore); they have a range colours and it's cheap ~10 usd for 100 feet (not including postage, but not so sure if they send to Mexico).

I think you need 550 paracord, not so sure what the numbers mean.

There are probably some better quality of paracords out there, but for me, they were good enough for what I wanted to do and personally from my amateur point of view, looks nice. I'll post a picture of what I've done once I get home.

I can also vouch for bushcraftstore, purchased from them several times now, always flawless

service.

The 550 refers to the tensile strength, namely 550 paracord is rated for 550 lbs. There's

also some weaker paracord (450? not sure anymore) and stronger paracord (750 lbs).

I've always used 550 for sleeving since the tensile strength is pretty irrelevant when it

comes to sleeving (you don't use the paracord's core anyway, only the mantle), and 550 is

by far the easiest to find. I do have some 750 for camping and other outdoorsy stuff where

it might come in handy though.

I was thinking about getting everything from Lutro (http://lutro0-customs.com). It may be a little expensive but if I get the tools from one store and the paracord from other I would have to pay for multiple shippings (that sometimes can be expensive since I live in Mexico) and Lutro has coreless paracord which is supposed to be made for cable sleeving. This is pretty much what I would order (after I make all the upgrades to my PC).

It's a good option but since I live in Mexico I would preffer to buy eveything from Lutro instead of buying the sleeving on ebay and the tools from other place so that way I only pay for 1 shipping. Plus, almost all the paracord sotres on ebay only ship to the USA.
