So i got my build all done:

 

HAF X with 2 extra fans

ASUS ROG Hero vii 

i7-4790k

corsair h100 cooler

corsair 2400mhz cl11 16gb ram

Evga GTX 780 SC ACX

PSU: evga 850w G2 

 

i got the motherboard + cpu+ mem + cooler in a bundle pre-overclocked, and its not stable at all, normal use is fine but the minute i do a prime 95 stress test it goes caput in around 3 mins. temp rises to 60c and sticks to it and outta nowwhere it dies. also at idle i sit around 20c

now i know that getting it preovercloked  is prob where ive gone wrong, but i was wondering if  anyone had similar setup and if they know good values for overclocking

currently my voltage is set at 1.3v which i belive is unecessarely high. gonna revert know to everything stock and run stress testing jst to make sure all hardware is ok.

 

any help will be extremely apreciated since im a complete NOOB at this overclokcing business and i dnt wanna fry my parts.

Did you buy it from a store pre oc'ed?..

 

Revert everything to default in bios. On stock voltage go as high as you can (clock) and the other part other guys will tell cuz I am an amd guy.

And turn off the power saving features , there names on amd is probably different so yeah wait for others answers.

I used it quite a lot when I was overclocking my 4770K and it helped me get to a stable 4.4GHz (my chip isn't the best but not the worst). It gives a lot of 'safe' voltages and things so stay a bit below their recommendations and you should be all good. You can probably go right up to their recommendations but as you have probably worked out by now, there are no guarantees with overclocking.

 

Also there has been plenty of talk around that using Haswell chips of Prime 95 causes extreme heat draw and it is generally recommended not to use prime 95 or Intel Burn Test (Linpack sort of stuff). You could just grab intel XTU, run the stress test in that program AND the benchmark (do the benchmark a few times as it is more taxing than the stress test for a shorter period of time).

 

There is still lots of debate over the best way to overclock Haswell, it's kind of a nightmare in some ways. That should give you some starting points but if you want to fine tune your overclock you've got a lot of reading to do on the internet!

P.S. There is never anything wrong with buying it pre-overclocked, in fact it's probably better if it's covered by the warranty. If the computer is not performing as intended I would be telling the store to fix it to working order (give you a new processor or whatever they have to do). The blame is 100% on the store and not you, it is their responsibility to give you a fully functioning product.

yeah reading is all ive done ive started using aida64 trial version for some stability testing, theyre software seems more rich and tests more things including the gpu which i nice since that will give of some heat into the case so its nice to c all of it stress tested at once running it now fora hour and right now no issues on completly  stock nothing touched

need to go put my xmp profile though as my corsair 2400mhz is running at 1600 mhz ... but ty for you reply

 

if anyone has got similar set up i would apreciate some overclock values if possible :)

 

and also it wouldnt have nothing to  do with my powersupply woulkd it ? its got enough juice for these overclocks i assume.

if you are only gaming you wont see any improvement from overclocking this cpu so i'd suggest you load optimized default settings and call it a day.

yes...unless the op is into video rendering or stuff that would benefit faster cpu...but in regards to gaming the limitation comes from the gtx780 so ramping cpu clock will not provide any benefit it will only likely degrade the chip faster...so i would advise to run stock settings and save overclocking for later in a couple years once the gpu has been upgraded to something faster and the cpu will no longer be up to snuff in newer games...for now even 2ghz would be alright i played bf4 at 2ghz with my i7 and my gtx780 was still having a mouthful and performance was exactly the same.
