stupid noob ram question

I may seem really stupid and nooby for asking this, but i just want to know. My laptop has a single 8gig stick of ram in it. If i were to add in another stick of the same ram, would it combine to 16gb? I know that i need to upgrade the ram, but don't feel like paying almost double for a new dual channel kit.

As long as it's the same model of ram and there is another open slot I don't see why there would be a problem

yep, you should be good to go if the ram is the same speed. Voltage may be a factor, but 9/10 times you don't have to worry about it

ive seen it go all the way up to 16 and 32 before.

and is there any program like cpuz or something like that that would tell me the specific details of ram i have so i can find the exact one?
