How can computer code help solve problems in a community?

I am trying to write up an essay for AP Computer Science. So far, I have that code can help create smarter traffic control systems to reduce traffic. What other things can code do to help solve problems in a community?

I guess you could say that you could help some charities, and create programs for them to track their, money, donations, total expenditure. Also you could make a program as a learning tool for younger kids to the taste of programming like in a class or something.

I think the traffic control argue is flawed as the causes of traffic are human error, women in suvs blocking the intersection and trying to merge at the last second are to blame not the traffic lights.

You can also use code to work out areas in a town where crime is more likely to happen. (Like looking at where bars/clubs/pubs are).

I disagree. During rush hour or high volume times, the traffic lights can have an adjusted pattern that can work better in those situations. They could even use sensors to detect when a vehicle approaches an intersection and connect to the internet to get important traffic info.

Please cite your sources because you're going to need it for the essay any way. Since I'm guessing you're a high school student, I doubt you have seen traffic as an adult who commutes everyday has. I proposed a rebuttal, so convince me that longer traffic light durations can solve traffic problems because it looks like it will just traffic equalize out and nothing is accomplished as you just moved the traffic somewhere else.

You can have a longer duration depending on the amount of traffic coming from a certain direction.

...Please cite a source, and think logically about space & what these car would occupy is a finite amount of space with enough distance for safety. You said "from a certain direction", so a majority of the cars are going to the same direction, then what happens at this traffic light and the next, and what about the traffic light where it meets another direction of traffic with even more cars?

The instructor is looking for theoretical stuff so I do not have sources, this is my own idea. With all the all of the traffic lights being interconnected, they can be programmed to deal with situations like the one you said. A set pattern can't be as efficient ans something that can adapt to changing situations
