Hospital here wants ....

Hospital here in my city wants me to pay $33.90 for copies of hospital records.  They say it is a flat $30 fee for everyone and then there is tax on that.  My jaw just dropped when I was told this on the phone and I asked for an explanation hoping to hear some sort of explanation that made sense and I didn't.  She didn't tell me how many pages there were and they don't charge per page which actually may save on cost.  Anyway not the news I needed when it is bad enough I have no lawyer due to idiotic policies in place for Legal Aid Ontario and my response to a petition to the court is not even started and court is tomorrow.  

$33.90!

Anyone ever pay a fee to get hospital records or avoid that by bringing a motion in court for the hospital to release them? Is it possible to avoid the fee that way?

Btw I am in Ontario, Canada so interested in hearing from people in this province and I know there are some on here.

I don't believe I've ever paid for them here in the U.S. but I've never needed them for legal things just the military.

That seems about right. We had to pay processing fees for my wife's records from a few places in the states.

I paid $30 for a duplicate copy of my birth certificate. These kind of fees are not really uncommon.
