Hey guys :)

Background info:

30/30 Connection. All devices are wireless but my desktop PC and PS4. A family member works from home and uses the Wireless connection (have tried to convince them that they need to plug in as what they do is very reliant on a stable connection). The family member connects remotely to another PC (far away from home basically) and then through that they work.

The problem:

Every so often there's only two of us using the internet, myself and them. They complain about there being slow speed issues, pages not loading fast etc. So I start monitoring my usage through Task manager (Win 7). I'm using less than 100kbps at all times and they're complaining, this is a very small amount compared to 30mbps. As soon as I stop using the internet (Close down game for example) she says that it is fine. My question is, when I download games etc. at the full speed, no one complains (very rarely someone will) but then when I'm using a minimal amount it's very slow on one PC.

What's the issue here? Is it that some of the games I'm playing have multiple connections and it is sort of a mini DDOS? Is the PC just too old and full of crap that some pages take ages to load as the CPU is too stressed? Maybe the remotely connected PC is having internet issues? Those are the three things I can think of off the top of my head. What do you think?

Ok, there are many things that could be going wrong here... So i'm going to try and get you going in the right direction.

First, I agree with you on the fact that family member should be using a hard wired connection instead of wifi, especially connecting remotely to a work office.  One thing to try might be a powerline ethernet adapter, it's an inexpensive way to essentially have a hard wired connection to a computer without actually running a bunch of ethernet wire.  That being said here we go with more info...

Perhaps there is something else running in the background on your desktop that is chewing up internet bandwidth:  torrent files downloading, netflix streaming, antivirus updates, windows updates, etc.  The only way to be sure that it's your pc causing the issue would be to unplug it & have the family member use their computer for remotely working.  After they begin working for a few minutes, then plug your pc back in, see what happens.  If it kills the connection for the other family member then disconnect again, & plug into a DIFFERENT port on the router/switch, then see what happens again.  If the issue is gone, wonderful!  mark that port on your router/switch as possibly being bad, if the issue is still there try replacing the ethernet cable from your PC to the router/switch - if that fixes the issue then wonderful!  If not then i need a little more info to help you troubleshoot the network issue.

Please answer the following:

brand of router

brand of switch

brand & model of computer family member is using

brand & model/specs of the computer you are using

try to explain how everything is currently hooked up on your home network, also include other device(s):  smart tv, set top box, blu ray player, other computers on network, anything that access the local network - tell me about it.

who is your internet service provider?

what web browser do you use as your default?  what browser does the other family member use as default?

what or how does the other family member connect to their work?  (exampe:  remote desktop, VPN, gotomypc, etc.)

I know that was a long post, hopefully i'll get you going in the right direction.  Most likely you'll have to post back, but I hope this helps!  Take care, Merry Christmas!!
