Wat!?

You can OC a i3, I thought they were locked...

Heck what do I know

I think the i3 will be a bottleneck

Can you get a SSD in there?

1st gen i3s, i5s, and i7s are all unlocked no matter which you buy. My i5 650 is unlocked...

Okay! I have a plan.

I actually have a old laptop i don't use and i just went to a laptop selling website, they offered to buy it for $105. With this i can buy a used CPU from Ebay for something up to that price and still get everything i wanted.

What CPU do you recommend? I'm seeing lots of things on Ebay. I'd have to ditch getting 4GB of RAM and sticking with 4 instead of 8 to get a decent CPU.

i7 860

4 cores, 8 threads, 45nm, 2.8 GHz, overclockable. You can take it over 3+GHz with ease, even if your mobo is on the crappy side.

This chart doesn't include it, but includes the 950 which is just under it.

From the Anandtech CPU final roundup (updated)

As you can see, on a demanding game, with a 7970 at 1440p this CPU can keep up, no problems.

Woah!, nice twist. Let's say you can use $150 final, for the CPU and mobo; you can get something like a nice FM2+ Mobo, a 860K and a basic Air cooler, cross the 4GHz barrier easily. You can go a little bit over budget  with a FX6300/8320 and a motherboard that doesn't suck, as well as a 1150 basic board and a low end i5.

I'm buying lots of new hardware using Christmas money and i'm not sure if something might go wrong because my CPU isn't powerful enough.. can someone help?

The CPU i got is a Intel Core i3-540 Dual-Core 3.06GHz (From what i know this can be heavily overclocked)

The hardware i'm buying is a mid-tower that can fit a microATX & a 600W PO. Oh, did i forget to mention a graphics card? I'm also getting a SAPPHIRE DUAL-X 100373L Radeon R9 280 for $200. And 4GB to equal  8GB.

yes, ALL dual cores "are botleneck"

do "not even think" on jump from a dual core... TO A DUAL CORE

- - - -

You need a CPU upgrade to a pentinum g3258 and a z97 motherboard

Or at least try to

sorry man, but this is dumb

@Austin4606

buy an i5 (with 4 cores)

you can also buy a 1s gen i5 using the same motherboard you have

or jump to AMD friend

the FX 6300 is really cheap this days

APU = A10

The i3 is a dual core with hyperthreading....not a true dual core. A first gen i5 doesn't perform any better than a Haswell i3. Finally, a Haswell i3 will beat an FX6300 in almost all games; AND costs virtually the same amount once you factor in that the FX6300 needs a higher end board and an aftermarket cooler if you want to overclock to gain the maximum potential of the chip (which still ends up being less than a Haswell i3).

And it's worth noting, any of the Intel boards can support a Haswell i7 with no problems, whereas the FX motherboards can't properly handle an FX8320.
