editing a line in VS

whenever i try to edit a line in visual studio i have to rewrite the entire line because unlike every single text editor in existence vs only lets me overwrite characters rather than putting one in between

 

how do i fix this?

Haha brings back good memories. When I was younger this problem would pop-up out of nowhere had me lamenting using ms word 

 

Until of course I discovered the mystical 'insert' key

LOL first time i got this "problem" i was pulling my hair out!

 

That pesky INSERT key.

The first time I encountered this "problem" I pressed the insert key and made it go away.

Ohhhh the days when I didn't know what the insert key did... 

 

You'll get used to seeing the difference in the cursor on screen, if its normal and you can just type you just have the vertical line, however when you have insert on it should highlight the letter you are about to replace. Just hit insert whenever you're not seeing the vertical line and don't want to replace.
