Background: neither my wife or I have had a desktop PC in at least a decade and the time has come for us to leave behind our casual ways and invest in a home machine. Also, each of our laptops are each at least 5 years old.

Budget: $1500 for PC and $500 for monitor. These prices are flexible, although I would like to stay below 2k

Location: 'Murica.

Aim: We need a computer that can handle mild to moderate photo and video editing and I would like to be able to play some PC games again.

Monitors: After perusing this site for a week or so I am leaning towards LG 34UM95 over the Samsung UD590 as I think the computer will be used more for school/job/editing work than gaming unfortunately.

Peripherals: I need them all.

Why upgrade: we need something to work on.

This should suffice bruh. It's a nice build, everything included. The monitor you wanted was 1000 not 500 so it wouldn't fit into your budget. But the screen I chose is a nice alternative. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/wQvJRB

It really depends on what you will be doing with the computer.

If your'e doing heavy gaming, then you'll need a pretty beefy (end expensive) gpu.

If all youre doing is e-mail, netflix and whatnot, a $1500 budget is wayyyy overkill.

I wouldn't say that I will be doing heavy gaming, but I would like the option to play some games at reasonable quality.

Any recommended changes?

What kind of games were you thinking about? something like BF4 would need at-least a 270/760

IF you're doing video editing, then i'd recommend a decent i7 k series (i'm not exactly up to date on haswell i7s)

lolz.. to be fair though, atleast SBs number scheme made some sense. 2500k to 3570k? where do they get 70 lol.. then the 4670k... idk

Why would you recommend a $300 motherboard? Mild to moderate photo/video editing has no use for such an expensive motherboard, and nor does a gamer. Hell, I've had a Maximus V Gene for two years and still have yet to use half the features. I think a better option would be to step down the motherboard to something not so astronomical, and bump up the CPU to a locked i7. The Hyperthreading will help out rendering/transcoding times. Someone who has been out of the desktop scene for a decade likely won't dive head first into overclocking, so save a few dollars and get a locked CPU. I also realize this is an assumption, and I may be wrong.

I also recommend againt SLI'ing graphics cards when building a complete new system. I personally would rather buy the best single GPU I can afford. I'm not sure if the Adobe Suite can even take advantage of the CUDA cores of both cards.

I also recommend against a cheap TN monitor, considering the need for accurate colors. With the OP's budget, a better monitor can be squeezed in.

Well one would have thought that the upgrade to the 3570 would have been the 4570....nope! Instead it was the 4670 (yes, I'm referring to non K CPUs lol). Where'd they get the "6" from?

They like to keep ya guessing, I can say that much.

To be honest I don't even have a Steam account yet. My plan is to get one and a bunch of games come February when I will assemble the computer. I am getting the feeling that I may have asked for too strong of a build.

If we know what games you play or are planning on playing we can help you better. Photo editing can be done on a good CPU with a low end GPU, while for gaming the price might go up a lot on what you wanna play. For a 1500 dollar build you can make a sick gaming system but it might be totally overkill for what you are gonna do with it. If you let us know we can help you better :). I will look at some possibilities when I get home in 30 minutes.

I found this thread last night while digging around (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266320-1400-budget-fast-booting-graphic-design-photo-some-gaming/) and I think this will work well for my wife and I. Thank you guys for your help.

Looks a bit overkill but for everything you need it is gonna be super good for the coming years no problem in gaming at all with the 970. All I would say is look at how expensive a EVGA G2 750W is if it is the same price or cheaper then take it, if not then don't mind it.
