So I'm considering getting the 970.

What are people's thoughts on how future proof it is?

Will it work with my FX-6350 (I know it'll bottleneck) and M5A97 R2.0?

Which version is the best value for money of the current best value for money card? :P (TL;DR which version do you guys recommend and isn't just overpriced for fk all?)

EDIT:

I'm not looking to be able to max every game for the next 2 years or so - just be sure to be able to play them and hopefully meet at least their req spec.

Nothing is "future proof" and yes it will work with your cpu/mobo.

I would say to go for the Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 but it costs a bit more than the other 970s.

yup you are good and I'd suggest the Gigabyte G1 b/c it has great cooling, and they are picked so you know it will overclock well. Also from what I've seen around they are less likely to have problems with coil whine (mine doesn't have any issues which is great)

I suggest oveclocking the CPU to the best of your ability to get the most out of that card.

970 is good. Just make sure you OC your CPU as much as possible before it becomes unstable and you will be fine.

Ty but OCing the CPU isn't my biggest query atm - what version of the 970 do you guys recommend?

STRIX is sexier and lower noise and the G1 is faster.

You do realise under load they are exactly as loud as each other, and at idle the Strix is only two decibels quieter.

*Ohh my ears!!*

@OP get the G1, it's a great card :)

Not sure if that was a joke or if you're being an idiot.

Hey man please stop trolling me. If what you say is true when you say that the STRIX "is only 2 Decibels quieter at idle" then that would mean the STRIX is running negative decibels because at Idle the STRIX is 0 Decibels.

There's no such thing as negative decibels.

2 decibels quieter than the G1 does not make it -2 decibels. The G1 isn't 0Db, neither is your PC at idle.

The STRIX 970 is 0 Decibel at idle ... THE FANS TURN OFF  AT IDLE ! Stop trolling man you are digging deep.

"In IDLE the fans turn down, we just simply gave it a 35 DBa rating so its visible in the chart. But in that condition the card is of course in-audible."

Oh my fucking god you are an idiot.

You in your entire life have never experienced a 0 decibel environment, thus, while the Strix makes no noise, you still hear stuff from the surroundings.

Plus, I said the ASUS is two decibels quieter than the G1 at idle. At no point did I say the Gigabyte card is 0 decibel at idle...

So G1 looks to be the most popular. Just hesitate because most expensive and I can't get prime delivery off Amazon. >_>

I have the Gigabyte card, and I can tell you it's great, I can't hear it over my case fans, it overclocks like a champ, and never gets hot.

Crucially, it also has proper vrm cooling, which the Strix does not. This could lead to a longer life, and in SLI would matter, should you ever be interested in that. I/O is not talking much sense right now, but the gist of it is that the Gigabyte card is so quiet at idle that you can't really hear it anyway.
