Hello! My old  1 TB HDD is dying so I bought a 3TB HDD to replace it because I also need the extra storage....the thing is though that the old disk is partitioned and in every partition there are programs installed(it is not a boot drive of course).....so my question is if I need a migration tool to transfer the already installed programs to the new drive...and if I need this kind of software do you have any reccomandations?

Thank you.

to use the whole drive you will ave to convert the format from NTFS to GPT

You mean MBR to GPT. NTFS has got nothing to do with the issue.

Hey staman96,

What are the brands and models of the drives that you have (the old one and the new one)?
As the guys said, cloning would be the best option and Acronis is a good program to do that. For every manufacturer, Acronis has their special edition.
How are your drives formated (GPT, MBR and NTFS, FAT32, etc.)?

Captain_WD.

If this helped you, like and choose it as best answer - you might help someone else with the same issue. ^_^

Thanks for the replies....

Captain_WD,

The old drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.12 1 TB (exact model is ST3100528AS).....it is set as NTFS of course...but i don't remember the partitioning method....i believe that it's MBR.......the new drive is a WD Caviar Green 3TB(it was making a clicking sound and even the bios couldn't locate it) so I believe that the drive is faulty so I'm waiting for a WD Red 2TB to replace it....

Sorry to hear about the DOA WD Green. You should not have any problem using Acronis True Image WD Edition (here's a link: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=ONfVV6).

Post back if you have trouble using the software with WD Red.
