Piss poor ISP question

Alright so last night, I had clanwars. Exciting time of the day right? Just imagine your ping that is normally around 70ms shoots up to 1600ms just 10min before clanwars! Ikr, sucks. I called them soon after being taken out of clanwars due to connections and they told me that everything from their side coming to me was perfectly fine, no maintainance, no outstanding bills or anything. so.... my question to this community is:

 

If i buy one of those fancy modems like this one(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0B1-00MV-00003&cm_re=modem-_-0B1-00MV-00003-_-Product

will i have to keep paying monthly to my ISP(centurylink).

or will this modem basically supply me internet at the great speeds. 

 

and plz be nice lol, i only know how to build a computer not how the internet works, thank you

A modem is only capable of processing an internet signal provider by a Internet provider. You need a much larger installation and backbone to supply internet access. There's actually quite a lot to providing that access.

You will still have to pay the isp

A modem is an analogous to digital convert and vice versa.Data coming through lines is analogous so it needs to be converted to digital so that the computer can understand it.However getting a good modem might or might not improve your speeds and stuff.
