have you tried plugging the virgin router into the tp link one in the blue ethernet port?

The virgin has a built in modem, so i have to use that as my main router

Isn't the cable meant to go into the LAN ports and not the blue WAN ?

In which way is your current router horrible? Is the WiFi-signal too weak or is the internet speed too low?

If your signal is strong but your speeds low, the signal may be in conflict with other signals on the same channel. You can check that by using Wifi Analyzer for Android - by farproc or InSSIDer for Windows (download last free version here: http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html or buy the latest version which isn't free anymore) - by MetaGeek. If there is a channel conflict, enter your router's settings and set it to another channel (best use channel 1,6 or 11).

If your signal is weak and you want to connect the TP-Link as an accesspoint, you should do it this way http://www.tp-link.com/en/article/?faqid=417 according to TP-Link.

How did you connect your router to the Virgin Media one? If you followed the steps from the link above it should work. If not, please post.

The signal is too weak anywhere that's not in that room, there are no conflicts for 5gHz

I can't seem to connect to the TP link through ethernet, i am using powerline adapters

You should hook up the access point to a laptop and configure it there and then hook it up to your network:

  • Turn off DHCP on the access point and set the default gateway to the router's IP address.
  • The access point must have an IP address outside of your router DHCP range.

Okay, didn't know that the Virgin Media router was 5ghz. Didn't even think about that option  :P. I once tried to turn an old modem into a WiFi-repeater/AP and hook it up to the network via  Powerline and that didn't work too. Never bothered to make it work that way though, so I'm afraid I can't help any further.
