Motherboard for future build

Go to solution Solved by thesmallaussie17,

well the G45 is more a of a low end value oriented board,vs the GD65 which is more of a gamer/light overclocker board.

nothing wrong with the G45,just felt that the GD65 was more appropriate for your scenario,I could be wrong though.

I agree with you after reading some reviews it feels like the GD65 would suite my system fine thnx

Hey there guys :)

So I'm having troubles deciding what motherboard to get for a future build.

So what do I want from the motherboard? So I'll be running an SLI setup and a 4770k and plan on overclocking the cpu to 4.5ghz so i'll obviously be using an intel motherboard. I don't plan on running any more than two gpu's.

So I know that having a motherboard with the the capability of 4 way SLI setup will really not be need, however are there any benefits to getting a motherboard with 4 way SLI capability in terms of expansion slots?

I'll also be using 16GB of ram at between the 1600Mhz - 2133Mhz range.

I would like to keep the motherboard colour (AUS spelling) scheme to red and black (because that's what my build colour will be).

Also I'm not a hard core audiofile but good sound quality is important so should I choose a motherboard that has a good in built sound card or should I go for a separate sound card?

Money is not an issue as I'll be going all out (within reason) on this build. I'll happily pay the money for the best components for the system I'm building.

If I've missed anything please tell me. I'm not a new to computer hardware I have general knowledge about them so yeah.

Any help for you guys would be amazing so thanks in advanced  :D  (and sorry for the long post haha)

Well you have limited yourself to any red and black board with a Z87 chipset :D I would recommend something from like MSI or *shudders* Asus. those are good boards and for the most part they dont break the bank. and there isnt MUCH improvement with a board that is 4way ready.

Red and black and money no problem? There is only one word (acronym) for that: ROG.

EDIT: I would recommend the Asus Z87 Hero. And if you really want good sound, get an additional sound card (again, Asus Xonar series is excellent). However, the ROG boards do have good sound, but that depends what you consider good enough. Also, overclocking Haswell would mean you'll have to be extremely lucky to get a fantastic chip to achieve a 4.5GHz overclock, and have memory running at higher speeds. And as pointed out before, you wouldn't benefit from having more PCI lanes than necessary.

What's wrong with Asus motherboards?

Whats wrong with asus, other than the price tag, they are solid mobos. I quite like them actually. and ROG has some neat stuff.

Overpriced mediocre MEH!!! they arent bad but they arent good, in my opinion, they are like the apple of people who know about computers, everyone just follows them blindly and you are just super cool if you have a ROG board. effing hipster enthusiasts :p they arent bad but i just dont like them.

They have many reasons to be priced above other manufacturers. Higher quality components, more features than others, and many exclusive features are just scratching the surface. Saying their products aren't good or are mediocre is plainly wrong.

And ROG is not their only series of products. Their mainstream series of motherboards are very adequately priced, and still use better components than the rest of the industry.

There is no need for this disdain for their products, apple overprices for lower quality products, but asus gives you some things that you cant buy on any other mobo, for example their overclocking monitor/probe, it is not available on any other brand but asus, and asus boards look really sexy, what can you do about that.

Since he's gonna be running a 4770k, the Z77 chipset probably won't be that good of a choice ;)

But generally the Z87 mobos form asus (ROG-line) will work just fine.

MSI, nuff said about "quality", More bloat usless features you mean, and what "exclusive features"? this is my opinion and to say i am dead wrong is dead wrong of you.

Oh, I didn't really look at the post, I thought he was going for a 3770K and so i looked for lga 1155 instead of 1150. I wasn't wearing my glasses either.

For example, Asus uses 5K capacitors on its cheapest Z87 motherboards (and has been doing so for the past few of chipsets), whereas everyone else uses 2K. The ROG series uses 10K capacitors. Exclusive features? Most famously, OC panel? Even their DCUII cards have exclusive features (VGA Hotwire).

Your opinion is restricted to whether you like them or not, or what you think is bloatware or necessary. Whether they are mediocre or bad or good is a fact, which your opinion cannot influence.

the only scenario I can see 4 pcie x16 lanes being beneficial is that spacing the graphics cards out by 4 slots (since pcie x16 lanes usually has 2 slots between each one) would give them more airflow, though you would have to buy a longer sli bridge.

also is this what you had in mind?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/16EqK

Asus hasn't released their new GTX 780 aftermarket cooler, but that's the one I would go with for this build.

I picked the msi GD 65 because I think that the GD65 red accents are better looking than the red thats poured all over ROG boards.

also as to the sound card,if your an audiophile I'd say buy a xonar card ,especially since money isn't an issue.because if your an audiophile, have enough money to spend on an sli system without worrying about it,then chances are you have a decent sound system.and (decent sound system + onboard audio) * audiophile = - experience  :P

Yeah when I was looking it was really evident that the red/black colour scheme was limiting my system in terms of motherboard options. Also msi and asus seem to be good options to I was looking at the msi z87 G45 gaming motherboard that seemed like it would suit well. Is there any reason why I shouldn't go with gigabyte?

Yeah I probably will by buy a sound card and yes the Xonar has had some really good reviews that I've read so I'll probs go with that. Yeah I should've have said I hope to achieve a 4.5ghz overclock lol.

yeah that's what my initial thought on having 4 pcie x16 slots was that I could space out the cards to allow for better airflow/cooling to the gpu's but seems like it really isn't that much of an issue and looks like I'd be spending more money that needed.

I've look at the GD 65 sweet what kind of improvements does it have compared to the msi z87 G45 board?

And year the xnoar i'll probs get and I currently have a ath m-50 cans (which are really good for their price point I have been so happy with the overall quality and sound from them) but I'm looking to get the next step up in headphones.

I have an MSi board. Their BIOS is pretty bad. I went forum hunting to get a proper BIOS that worked with my Haswell (FYI it was some internal beta bios). I don't recommend MSi unless you know exactly wtf u are doing. Please stick with Asus - their auto functions are so easy and nice. Not to take away anything from MSi with the working BIOS - this thing is now flawless and has so much OC goodness.

what type of msi board do you have? and how so was it bad in your experience? and you said in the last sentence that the msi board is pretty good and has some good OC potential how do you get a msi board with a good working bios? is it an update that needs to be installed? Thnx
