Hey everyone,

Looking at getting a new graphics card for new computer (see my previous post in the Build Section)

Looking at a graphics card around and under $100 that can run most games at moderate-ish graphics as well as a bit of photoshop.

Current computer specs (TBC) of the rest of it is:

Motherboard ASUS A58M-K/2 x DDR3/1x PCI-E2.0 x 16 /1 x PCI-E2.0 x 1/1 x PCI /4 x SATA 3GB/8 x USB2.0/DVI/D-Sub/G

CPU AMD A8-6600K Quad Core APU BLACK EDITION, Socket FM2, 3.9GHz, 4MB Cache, integrated graphic

Graphics TBC

RAM Crucial DDR3 PC12800-8GB 1600Mhz CL11 Single Ranked Desktop Memory

Hard Drive Toshiba 1TB 7200RPM HDD

OS Microsoft Windows 8.1 64bit OEM

Graphics options that look good:

(Buying from uMart on advice, in Australia)

Gigabyte GV-N730-2GI GF GT 730

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=247&sid=195091

ASUS GF GT730-SL-2GD3-BRK

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=247&sid=196879

From what I can tell these cards are more or less identical, they're the same price and seem to have the same specs. Which is better? (These are the two cheapest)

SAPPHIRE R7 250 2GB DDR3 WITH BOOST; 1000MHz/1800MHz; VGA/HDMI/DVI-D

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=248&sid=161396

I was told the R7 240 wasn't worth the money and to look higher, so I went one higher. Is it worth it?

Gigabyte GV-R725OC-2GI R7 250 OC PCI-E 3.0 2GB DDR3, DVI/ HDMI/ D-Sub

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=248&sid=161255

Gigabyte's version of the R7 250 from what I can tell.

Gigabyte ATI HD 7770 OC Edition 1G

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=248&sid=154984

eVGA GT 640 2GB DDR3 DVI-I DVI-D Mini-HDMI

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=247&sid=162624

Asus GF GT640 PCI-E 2.0, 2GB 128-bit DDR3, 901/1782 MHz ,DVI, HDMI, Fan

https://www.umart.com.au/umart1/pro/Products-details.phtml?id=10&bid=3&id2=247&sid=156014

This list is in order of price ascending so I'm most interested in the advantages the more expensive ones have over the cheaper ones if there are any. Feel free to tell me of any other ones I should look at, I just got this list more or less of this blog post.

Thanks for any advice you may have.

PS: If you're going to tell me that I'm wasting my money on anything here, please tell me why. Just telling me something sucks is not going to convince me nor is it helpful to anyone. I'd like to actually gain some knowledge here...

Dollar to FPS Ratio.

There's a sweet spot for this, So you're technically better of spending 200 dollars on a GPU than 100.

You'll get more bang for your buck.

Ok thanks for these responses. I realise that there is the issue of bang for your buck, but I'm looking for something under $100. It does not need to be able to run games at 100fps on high quality 4k. From what I can tell from the video, the 7770 looks good. Is it the best option out of these? Is there a better option under $100 that I should get?

Why?

Longevity mainly.

Don't know your situation, but id you can save for just a bit longer you can go for a GPU that would deliver better performance at the present time and in the future.

Ok fair point. What longevity can I expect from these cards, and what should I want from a card? What card do you suggest?

Another thing, the CPU/motherboard setup in this currently has integrated graphics. Will this have an effect on the graphics card? Do I need a good graphics card as well as a half-decent onboard graphics? ie do the two combine in performance, or is it more the performance you can expect is the performance of the best piece of hardware? Any help on this would be great, I'm kind of confused atm.

On-board graphics will use system memory where as GPUs have their own VRAM.

Most people on a budget would recommend a strong AMD CPU without integrated graphics and a dedicated GPU.

I don't have much experience on the lower end GPUs, so I would have to dig into that beore recomending anything.

Second hand cards from local ads, and remember to try before you buy.

7770 is a fine card, especially for that price. I WOULD suggest, if hovering around $100, that a 750Ti for about $120 (I forget the AMD equivalent) are great deals. Can keep you for quite a bit.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
