I'm trying to keep the cost to around ~£350 on a build utilizing some recycled parts; new parts are shown in bold:

CPU: i5 4460

MB: Asus Z97-A

RAM: Cheapest 8GB kit (fastest speed)

GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7850 2GB OC

PSU: Corsair AX750W

HSF: Corsair H60 2013

Case: Corsair 450D

Ideally I'd like to select a cheaper case than the 450D while still considering an upgrade pathway leading to an i7. Any input on any aspect is welcome.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.

Get a Cooler MAster Hyper 212 or stick with the stock cooler.

You can also save some money by getting a cheaper board -- MSI Z97 G55 SLI, Gigabyte Z97x SLI (if you want to get a board with SLI support for potential upgrades), or some H87/H97 board with XFIRE support.

There are two reasons to get a Z-board:

  • You're going to be overclocking
  • You want SLI support.

Now, a 4460 can't be overclocked anyway; so unless you plan on upgrading to an Nvidia GPU (and then possibly adding a second one) theres no point in getting a Z-board.

Yes exactly I'm considering a higher quality board for those reasons. I'd be replacing the GPU in the close future followed by an unlocked i7 (as mentioned with the upgrade pathway). I'd also be taking advantage of the SATA Express/Ultra M2 features almost immediately. Hence why I thought a solid relatively good quality board was a more sensible allocation of funds in this context.

Well, why not wait and go straight into a 4790k?

M.2 and Sata Express still aren't worthwhile as there aren't any noticeably faster drives on either standard that aren't stupidly overpriced, and that isn't likely to change for at least a year if not more.

And Either of the boards (MSI Z97 G55 SLI and Gigabyte Z97x SLI) I suggested are just as good as the Z97-A but usually quite a bit cheaper.

get  pentium g3258 , its cheaper ,can play today's games at decent fps

It can play SOME of today's games at decent FPS, but in many it simply can't keep up -- and while it can maintain decent average framerates, the minimums are MUCH lower and MUCH more frequent (which is even worse than a lower average).

Well yes normally I would agree and wait until I could budget an X99 based liquid cooled i7 solution. However I'm unable to as this will enable a general re purposing of other systems/parts for my young children in time for Christmas.

No, it's a only a duel core and would not be fit for purpose given this specific context.

I meant an i7-4790k -- on the Z97 platform.
