Taking the SSD plunge

Just a word to say thanks to LMG for all the how to vids which have helped me build up the courage (could also be the incessant wait times) to try my first SSD and operating system install :-p

even though i'll still be bottlenecked by the rest of my system (gigabyte EP45-UD3 m/b with only SATA, Intel core2duo E8400, & 4GB DDR2 (bought system circa July 2009 (parts are prob 2008 stock lol), i'm tipping it'll still be a lot faster starting up and loading programs than my 512GB HDD

my biggest fear is getting everything running how it was, just faster. will post tomorrow with tears - hopefully of joy lol

fyi i bought a 256GB SATA3 SSD, all going well I'll get another 256GB SSD to bring it up to the same capacity as my HDD (i had a 50/50 partion in it)

Thanks Linus and crew, hope to see you on the faster side :-)))))))))))))))

That mobo supports RAID, more specifically RAID 0, so if you get a second SSD that's the same then you can combine them for doubled storage and (theoretically) doubled speed.

Nice. Upgrading to SSD was the best decision I made on my PC.

Never do this, ssd's do not benefit from raid 0, and its dangerous.

They do actually, doubling speeds. And with todays SSDs it's really not harming anything at all.

This is misleading information. Tell that to Linus who has personally used eight SSDs in RAID 0 in his personal system.

The only danger is that if you lose 1 disk in the array, all your data is lost. Just do backups...

From what I've read, it depends on the controller. With Samsung Evos, it's not recommended. With something like Intel 730s, or HyperX 3Ks, it shouldn't be too bad. If a disk fails, you lose everything.

Just set up the 4th SSD in my Raid 0. Not that going 3 up to 4 makes much difference other than the extra space. Glad this Micro ITX had 5 Sata's at least gives me one spot to back up off of.

I'd only run Marvell or Sandforce for RAID 0 if really asking for reliability. I had two Intel 530s in RAID 0 before and they were mind blowingly quick.
