Defective?

Go to solution Solved by GrandNoodleLite,

ALL drivers are updated ?

do some stress testing and check if the newest driver is installed correctly

Ok this is easy, I guess onboard audio? Onboard audio is processed by the CPU.

The high settings are stressing out your CPU, what does it mean, If the game uses 99% of the cpu, it won´t have enough processing power for the onboard audio sound.

What you can try to do: Activate V-Sync, lower realtek sampling rate to 24bit 48khz (or get a dedicated soundcard)

This is a general problems with higher gpu´s. Your GPU is NOT defective!

How to fix: Disable steamoverlay in every non steam game, MSI afterburner DISABLED. No apps running in the background.

Desktop *rightklick*-> Nvidia control center ->3D settings ->Global settings -> search for "Shadercache" set it to "DISABLE"->search for "maximal limit of prerendered images" set it to "1". If you have cpu hungry games, you can specify that game in the nvidia control panel right to the global settings tab and search your game.

BTW: Overclocking will make the stuttering worse!

Ok. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers, but this time, when I updated them from the drivers on the disc that came with my 980, I chose to do a "fresh install" when I was in the geforce experience. Since I did the fresh install yesterday morning I haven't had any issues with my games. That seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the help everyone!

I just got a new superclocked gtx 980 from evga and everything seems to be better except for two very noticeable problems in more demanding games. The first one is that I'll be playing a game around 30-40 fps, then the game freezes for literally a second (presumably loading stuff in) then will continue just fine. The second one is that while I'm playing a game, the music will just stop for no reason and then restart. This second one is especially evident on the main menu of Rome 2 Total War and while listening to the radio in GTA 4. Both of these problems have occurred in multiple games and started right after I installed my new graphics card. These are incredibly annoying. The first problem might be caused by having my settings too high, but I thought my superclocked 980 would be able to handle gta 4 without any issues and It doesn't explain the audio issue. Is my 980 defective or is there something else causing these problems?

The 980 is most likely not the problem, it's probably just the drivers for the games you listed and not much can be done for the optimization of those drivers.

Try messing with the settings in game a bit and see if that helps.

How do I do that and how do I tell if it's working?

They should be. I installed the drivers from the disc that came with the card and updated them with the geforce experience, which now says my drivers are up to date.

I don't know. It seems like a lot of games would need bad drivers for that to be the case. It's kind of a bummer that I still have to mess around with settings with these old games that the 980 should be able to handle easily.
