I have a friend wanting a gaming machine for 1080p and has a budget of £1000.

He needs monitor and peripherals too.

I was thinking of telling him to go i3...

I have looked up some video's of the 8320 paired with GPU's like the R9 290 and 280x, and from my own experience it is not up to the task with such GPU's.

I was thinking the 280x or 290 would be a good partner for the i3 to keep prices down.

Feel free to chime in here.

What kind of games does he intend to play? What kind of CPU performance does he actually need? An i3 would give him the opportunity of upgrading to an i5 or an i7 without changing motherboard at some later stage, but depending on what games he even wants to play, he may not need to immediately.

I believe a Pentium G3258 overclocked would give better performance than a 4th gen i3, would it not? Hyperthreading doesn't make too much of a difference between i5s and i7s.

From what i know, HT makes a huge difference when it is used in conjunction with less than 4 cores.

This test was done with a 3rd gen i3, but I don't think enough's changed between Ivy and Haswell to make a huge difference.

He was also using a 270X, so there's a chance that there is a bigger difference when you go up to higher tier cards like 290s and 780s.

This is what I've thought for a while, that a Pentium makes sense over an i3 for a just gaming scenario, until you get to wanting an i5.

I missed the budget though. Heh. Yeah for £1000 you don't really need to worry about skimping on performance lol

Not sure I agree with the low profile cooler in the above build though.

If you're on a budget, why are you getting that expensive mouse and keyboard... I always thought that if you're getting a PC for, let's say 800$, then you want the most out of it in terms of performance, you won't go buying expensive mechanical keyboards and expensive mouses...

But is the difference worth it for the i5 right now?

I included the z97 board in my revised post above, and peripherals  are a massive factor when attempting to enjoy your games.

But it's far easier to change your mouse/keyboard/monitor/speakers... Than it's to change your CPU...

Also, an unlocked i5 is worlds better than i3, especially when OC'ed very high

But overclocking only yields so much in gaming performance, the CPU is not a bottleneck at stock, just saying.

Yeah, but if you look at it realistically, maybe his goals with this machine will change O.o Maybe he'll start streaming games to Twitch, maybe he'll get into rendering O.o

Who knows O.o When i bought my first Android phone, i didn't even dream that i'd do to it what i did (rooting, custom modding...), so it's better to get a better rig while sacrificing some peripherals...

from your sig you have all you need to test it yourself...try disabling cores in your BIOS and turning HT on and off and see what impact it makes on gaming performance it will take you about 20 minutes to figure this out...

the pentium sucks even highly overclocked, the i3 is okay but will bottleneck higher end GPU's...a core i5 around 3.5ghz should be good for most games and the 4 cores + HT won't bottleneck anything in any games regardless of the clockspeed.

Sorry i'm being lazy :/

then you'd have to listen to somebody who tested all this long ago and re-did the testing about 2 weeks ago AKA as me...

i would consider this if the budget is tight:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4440 3.1GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($164.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($27.99 @ Newegg)

Total: $192.98

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-11-29 10:29 EST-0500

Or this if he can spend some more:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($299.98 @ NCIX US)

Motherboard: ASRock H97M Anniversary Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($62.94 @ SuperBiiz)

Total: $362.92

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-11-29 10:31 EST-0500

This i7 cpu is 4.4ghz out of the box, lock this speed across all 8 threads...no need for a more expensive Z97 motherboard and CPU cooler this one is pre-overclocked and most of them won't go any higher than 4.6ghz anyway.
