Hey guys

I was just wondering, what will happen if I use a 16 GB RAM stick in a mobo supporting 4 dimm slots and a max of 32 GB RAM? Will it only see 8 GB, or will it see 16 GB or will it not work at all? This is just for my curiosity, and what will happen in theory :D

My setup: i5 3570K  - Corsair H100i - MSI Z77 GD65 - 256 GB Samsung 840 pro SSD - Corsair AX760i - Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce 2GB - 4x4 GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer RAM - Corsair Carbide 500R (modded side window)

It will let you use all 16 GB :)

Okay so I would only be able to have 2 RAM sticks in the system, giving me a total of 32 GB?

You mean the motherboard has 4 DIMM slots, AND support a maximum of 32GB total?

If so, it won't recognize the 16GB stick(s).

If you are referring to YOUR MSi Z77-GD65 motherboard...it follows what I said above.

Also...

Page 1-16 of your motherboard manual

Due to chipset resource usage, the system will only detect up to 31+ GB of memory (not full 32 GB) when all DIMM slots have 8GB memory modules installed.

And...

MSi has only tested a max of 8GB density DIMMs with the Z77-GD65 motherboard.

http://www.msi.com/file/test_report/TR10_2536.pdf

And....good luck finding non-ECC 16GB DDR3 DIMMs.

Yeah, that is what I mean. Somehow I forgot to write total...

If the mobo only supports 32GB, I would go with 8GB sticks.

This way you always take advantage of dual-channel mode. the performance for 2 sticks is better then one stick (2x 8GB instead of 1x 16GB, 4x 8GB instead of 2x 16GB).

Yeah, I know. This is just a theoretical question :)
