i'm trying to help someone build a 600 pounds, for gaming

and i thought for the price drops and stuff of the GPUs on AMD, i though to build my friend a full amd

so 285,

but the GPU is the one that is confusing me....

Not quite.

The R9 285 performs worse than both the R9 280 and 280X.

May I clarify this? Let me compare this to a Radeon R9 280.

Same number of Stream processors, 1792

R9 280 has wider memory bus, 384-bit while R9 285 has 256-bit

R9 280 has 3 GB GDDR5 while R9 285 has 2 GB GDDR5

R9 280 has faster boost clock (933 MHz) than R9 285 (918 MHz)

This doesn't mean, however, that the Radeon R9 285 doesn't have any advantages over the Radeon R9 280; for example, the R9 285 has TrueAudio, has a lower TDP (190 W), and utilizes the GCN 1.2 architecture.

Long story short, the Radeon R9 285 could be considered a cheaper, newer, and lower-end remake of the Radeon R9 280.

The 285 is the only one that does not follow that rule. I hope this is fixed soon.
