Hello all.

My PC has been shutting off randomly as if the power cord was being pulled out. It started months ago but ran fine for the last few months, but recently its happening a lot. I have tried a different PSU and the same problem occurs. I believe it to be the MOBO, but am looking for other suggestions to what I have already tried...

It will shut off randomly and at any point after I have turned it on. It will power-off at the MOBO splash screen, during windows boot, or randomly after being on for a week. Sometimes after shutting off it takes a minute or two before it will turn on again (nothing happens when I press power button).

I have already done the following and the problem is still occurring...

  • Used a different PSU (450w Silverstone SFX)
  • Re-seated GPU, RAM, and CPU
  • Completely rebuilt the system and changed cases
  • Used different GPU
  • Temperatures and voltages seem fine. (nothing is oc'd)
  • Fresh install of OS and all drivers
  • Used multiple boot drives independent of existing drives
  • Checked windows error logs. only state the recent shutdown was unexpected.

System Specs

  • Windows 8.1 64-bit
  • MOBO: Asus P8z77 I-Deluxe (bios 0902) ~1yr old
  • CPU: i7-3770k (Stock) ~ 9 months old
  • RAM: 8gb (2x4) Corsair XMS3 1600 (currently at 1333, problem happens at both speeds) ~9 months old
  • GPU: EVGA 970 SC (stock, problem happened with Saphire 7950 as well) > 2 months old
  • PSU: Corsair RM650 (happened with Silverstone SFX 450w as well) ~ 7 months old
  • 120gb Samsung 840 pro (OS) ~ 9 months old
  • 480gb Sandisk extreme 2 ~ 1 year old
  • 4tb WD Green > 3 months old
  • 1tb WD Green ~ 2-3 years old
  • H100i ~ 9 months old

I am fairly sure it is the MOBO, but any suggestions/things to check would be helpful before I get a new one, don't have anybody to borrow one from to test.

*I should add I fixed a bent pin on the socket the day I got the MOBO which was 15 months ago*

It's either the motherboard or your having some sort of power outage which is highely unlikely.

So yea I would go ahead and either rma that one if it's still under warranty or maybe find a friend with one you could use and see if it happens again.

It's not a power outage, only my PC is shutting down. I can RMA it, I just want to try things I have not thought of before I do.

There is physically nothing else to do, you have almost everything there is to do excluding RMA or buying a new motherboard.

Have you checked to see if there are any spots in the computer that could potentially be causing a short? that is honestly the only other thing I can think of. At this point I would just reccomend taking advantage of the warranty, I mean that what it's there for.

I haven't been able to find anywhere there could be a short. You're right about doing an RMA, this is probably as far as this thread will go. I just needed a voice other than my own. Thanks

Glad I could help, hope everything works out, hate not being able to use my rig.
