Far Cry 4 Extremely Dark Shadows

Dumbpants

Alright, so I'm attempting to play far cry 4 (good game so far), but I'm having a terrible time trying to fix these shadows.

They are so black to the point I can't even see anything. In the screenshots I'm only showing the town, but in the forest, where the whole thing is shadows, the entire game is just black! I can't see a thing! So I've looked this issue up, and this is apparently a problem, but others seem to be able to fix it easily by having the ultra preset, and switching the AO method from HBAO+ to SSAO. I tried the same thing, and nothing happens, shadows are just as dark as they were. Restarted computer, verified game cache, reinstalled drivers (newest ones nvidia ones, 344.75), and nothing works. I'm using two gtx 780's in SLI. Please help me out guys! Thanks in advance.

Mmhhhm. Also, I've tried soft shadows all the way down to low, and nothing changes.

Can't even boot the game after like a billion tries and trouble shooting; Might just buy a console because I'm sick of all this crap with the latest PC games (i'll still play a lot of PC.)

OT: Try disabling shadows in the settings and if you haven't already update to 1.2.0

This is SLI related. Far cry 4 does not yet support it correctly, despite practically being sponsored by NVIDIA and putting an "NVIDIA " preset above Ultra, making it look like your game can't look near as good on AMD

muh specs

Gaming and HTPC (reparations)- ASUS 1080, MSI X99A SLI Plus, 5820k- 4.5GHz @ 1.25v, asetek based 360mm AIO, RM 1000x, 16GB memory, 750D with front USB 2.0 replaced with 3.0  ports, 2 250GB 850 EVOs in Raid 0 (why not, only has games on it), some hard drives

Screens- Acer preditor XB241H (1080p, 144Hz Gsync), LG 1080p ultrawide, (all mounted) directly wired to TV in other room

Stuff- k70 with reds, steel series rival, g13, full desk covering mouse mat

All parts black

Workstation(desk)- 3770k, 970 reference, 16GB of some crucial memory, a motherboard of some kind I don't remember, Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI, CM Storm Trooper (It's got a handle, can you handle that?), 240mm Asetek based AIO, Crucial M550 256GB (upgrade soon), some hard drives, disc drives, and hot swap bays

Screens- 3  ASUS VN248H-P IPS 1080p screens mounted on a stand, some old tv on the wall above it.

Stuff- Epicgear defiant (solderless swappable switches), g600, moutned mic and other stuff.

Laptop docking area- 2 1440p korean monitors mounted, one AHVA matte, one samsung PLS gloss (very annoying, yes). Trashy Razer blackwidow chroma...I mean like the J key doesn't click anymore. I got a model M i use on it to, but its time for a new keyboard. Some edgy Utechsmart mouse similar to g600. Hooked to laptop dock for both of my dell precision laptops. (not only docking area)

Shelf- i7-2600 non-k (has vt-d), 380t, some ASUS sandy itx board, intel quad nic. Currently hosts shared files, setting up as pfsense box in VM. Also acts as spare gaming PC with a 580 or whatever someone brings. Hooked into laptop dock area via usb switch

I assume so. They'll address it after micro transactions again likely xD.

I assume they'll fix it. It's not an AMD problem, and they always gimp AMD performance in order to make NVIDIA benchmark better initially, so I'd think they'd do it pretty fast.

hmmmm. could you possibly give me a screenshot of your game with shadows in the screen?

And I'm curious if it could have something to do with 780, but that wouldn't really make since, seeing as we are on the same architecture.

This issue has been widely reported as an SLI issue. I had the same issue myself. I didn't try to fix it as it wasn't my machine (I didn't buy this shit), but I imagine some tweaking with the NVIDIA panel could help

Maybe NVIDIA updated drivers?

I just turned off SLI, and the shadows work fine now. hmmmm, very odd. And I only bought it because I loved far cry 3 so much... ;_;

I'm not buying anymore ubisoft trash until they get rid of their management though.

How are your two cards running in SLI with different max core clocks?

Also, driver version?

And did both of you get the day one patch?

Honestly I have no clue, think its the load that is on each card.

That's terrible. I see people reporting extreme unstable frame rates on this game as well. Like from 150 down to 20 on the 980 to as high as 250+ for some reason

Yeah and it's quite annoying; plus I can quietly sit down and play on a console without worrying about my lack luster computer parts (dispite the fact I could upgrade if I didn't get a console)

I'm done playing a lot of titles on consoles. I really have been holding of on this generation, they are just bad PCs, and the games that come out don't really work day one either, so there's not real advantage to me.

I'm done playing a lot of titles on consoles. I really have been holding of on this generation, they are just bad PCs, and the games that come out don't really work day one either, so there's not real advantage to me.

Ugh, this is really putting me in a pinch then.  :(

How are your two cards running in SLI with different max core clocks?

Also, driver version?

And did both of you get the day one patch?

I got the day one patch I'm running Driver version 344.75 with no tweaks done to the driver besides enabling SLI in the Nvidia Control Panel.

hmmmm. could you possibly give me a screenshot of your game with shadows in the screen?

And I'm curious if it could have something to do with 780, but that wouldn't really make since, seeing as we are on the same architecture.

Here is a link to my deviant Art 4k Screen shot showing the lighting and the shadows in this picture are on Soft Shadows.

Dark shadows and ghosting textures in SLI? I had same problem and fixed it....originally posted in here

I saw a lot of peeps having similar trouble after the nvidia 344.75 drivers dropped yesterday causing those running in SLI to have super dark shadows at night and severe ghosting of burned in textures. I did some tinkering to find a fix for both...I will test more as the texture issue can take time to happen. anyways you'll need nvidia inspector to do this.

1. Open nvidia inspector, go to settings (next to driver version) and from profiles choose far cry 3
Under sli bits copy the to sli strings and paste them on a notepad. or i can be nice give them to you here:

SLI compatibility bits (dx1x)
0x081902F5 (Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon DLC, Far Cry 3)

note: I have also tried some numbers I saw in another forum (forgot which, SLI bits was on my clipboard I had for researching fix) some people have better luck with this string instead of the (dx 1x) SLI bits above, especially if having issues with unfix-able shadows/ textures flickering that going back to the main menu and continuing won't fix. Though I found issues with trees at night near cliffs (weird setting i know right?). They seem to have a texture issue causing the leaves and some higher branches to go white or translucent and back again. A fairly minor bug to be honest.

SLI compatiblity bits
0x02402C05 (Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon DLC, Far Cry 3)

2. Using nvidia inspector choose far cry 4 under profiles and paste the strings in their proper SLI bits line accordingly.

3. Apply changes in upper right

4. Play Far Cry 4 in SLI at night with the proper shadows.

UPDATE: I played the game for hours with no texture ghosting. Yea!!! Also I had to use V-sync to keep it buttery smooth, off I found it stuttered but this has been true for me since far cry 2 and the move to the then first iteration of the Dunia engine.

UPDATE:I tested both SLI bits settings mentioned in step 1 for (dx 1x) and there was a very small differance for me in FPS

0x081902F5 (Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon DLC, Far Cry 3) FPS= 92-94

0x080020F5 FPS= 93-95

I've tuned down ambient occlusion and it worked fine. It's just a tweak, not a fix.

This is SLI related. Far cry 4 does not yet support it correctly, despite practically being sponsored by NVIDIA and putting an "NVIDIA " preset above Ultra, making it look like your game can't look near as good on AMD

I have this issue and it isn't SLI related for me because I don't have two graphics cards. The only way I can play the game is without HBAO+ :/

I've read that changing ambient occlusion to SSAO will help with this issue. Can't confirm it it actually works or not. Worth a shot I suppose?
