Which Audio/Mic Setup

What should I use for gaming and listening to some music?

I'm considering either a gaming headset (Like the Hyper X Cloud), headphones and a Mod Mic, or headphones and a real microphone.

 

Which would be the best, and what headphones/mics/headsets (preferably under $100) do you recommend?

The Cloud's microphone isn't the best, and the mids are a bit muted, but they do sound fine and are super comfortable. I use a Zalman modmic (clip-on) whenever I use the Clouds - I mainly use my Sennheiser HD280's.

 

What kind of sound signature do you like? Flat/analytic? Bass-y?

I mostly listen to classic rock on my computer, so I guess headphones that have good sounding mids would be good.
