Please don't use LMGTFY in your posts, it is against the COC.

Is it better than windoes 8.1?

If you aren't a heavy gamer than I would say so, big time. Tho keep in mind you can't run your standard Win32 applications on Linux (you may in WINE but that's besides the fact). So if you do mostly web surfing, talking on Skype and watching movies in VLC then Linux is the way to go. What do you primarily use your computer for?

Ubuntu is a free and open-source operating system. It is a variant of linux that comes pre-packed with a gui/window manager, and some essential tools...

More details in the link... Go try it for yourself and try to explore its sibling Linux Mint.

If you are running on older machine and don't game that much, its one of better choises as OS. For non-gamer Mint is even better. But if you like to do some gaming, for me both Steam and HS with WINE were easier to setup in Ubuntu than in Mint.

I like Mint, but I think Unity looks all the better (more functional in comparison to Windows taskbar).

If you primarily game I would stick to Windows. Windows games don't run on Linux unless you run them through WINE which isn't as good as running them on Windows (if they even work).
