Will these be any good? Is there a cheaper alternative that isn't prebuilt? It's only for cold storage, no HTPC stuff.

why do so many good cases only come in black and white

that seems really expensive buying server grade stuff =O , can i ask why you dont want a prebuilt if your just doing storage?

Its not necessary but it is the wise choice Solkia, you get an enterprise cookie for that and made me proud if not happy. Remember if you value your data then you buy something equally as valuable to store it on. If you could care less then yea buy the cheapest drive you can because you don't care so why waste the money (meant for those who think it was overkill, the ES.3 killer drives that is)

Forgot, which OS are you aiming for?

I roll with sigs off so I have no idea what you're advertising.

This is NOT the signature you are looking for.

Sounds like a sound investment to me, I actually have been dream configuring a similar system, but I don't really have that much data to save so may end up with and external RAID 1 enclosure and just use USB3 or eSATA to mount.

Honestly, if it is cold storage, you don't need those fancy drives.  Just get some cheap 4tb drives.  Also, how much storage are you needing?  How many of the drives are you getting?

If you are just doing cold storage for your private files, and don't need fast random access, you don't need expensive server grade parts.

Your key factor is how much actual storage you need.
