Hi all new user here

I currently have a I5 2500K CPU with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ CPU Cooler and a Gigabyte GA-P67X-UD3 B3 Motherboard

I want to upgrade my CPU to a I7 3770K

My question is do I just remove the CPU cooler > Install new CPU > Reapply thermal paste > reattach CPU cooler > all good?

Thanks

his motherboard supports the 3770k with bios update, op does not need to change his motherboard

My question is do I just remove the CPU cooler > Install new CPU > Reapply thermal paste > reattach CPU cooler > all good?

Thanks

welcome to the forums :) ..those step's sounds good to me! just don't forget to remove the old stuff first & use a pea size dot of thermal paste in the center of the cpu before applying and don't spread it, the heatsink will do that with its pressure during installation.

Happy upgrading !

I stand corrected.A little bit confuse between sandy bridge-e and ivy bridge

Just remember 39xx = 2011, 37xx = IB i7, and 26xx/27xx = SB i7.

Well as it would work with a BIOS update I would probably also look for money for a new motherboard to get some of the features of Z77 like USB 3.0. It's your choice ofcourse, and just buying a new CPU would work, but I would look for a new motherboard aswell.

My Gaming PC: i5 2500k @ 4.6 GHz, ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 Motherboard, Noctua NH-D14 CPU Cooler, Corsair XMS3 8 GB 1333MHz RAM (2x4), MSI R7870 Twin Frozr 2GD5 @ 1050-1100 MHz (Twin Frozr 3), Intel 330 Series SSD 120 GB, Seagate Barracuda 2 TB HDD, Corsair Carbide 500r Case, FSP Aurum Series Gold 700w PSU.

Keyboard: Corsair K90, Mouse: Corsair M60, Mousemat: Razer Vespula, Headset: SteelSeries 5Hv3, Monitor: ASUS VG248QE.

It will work on P67 after bios update, but then again i wouldn`t waste money on 3770K i would switch mobo for used shiny Z68 and OC the hell out of that 2500K (you know those CPU`s are champs at OC ?)

In general i7 CPU`s are better only for some more serious work (then gaming) likes of video editing, etc....

As mentioned above,

All you have to do is update your motherboard for support of the Ivy Bridge Socket.

You can easily find the BIOS update here:

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3815#bios

Ivy Bridge is supported after BIOS Update F9, and update F9 is the current stable update I would recommend.

Your motherboard does support dual BIOS modes, so please contact Gigabyte support ASAP if you cannot reflash your motherboard on your main BIOS, and switch to your secondary BIOS.

You can learn how to flash your BIOS from Gigabyte here:

http://www.gigabyte.com/webpage/20/HowToReflashBIOS.html

My question is do I just remove the CPU cooler > Install new CPU > Reapply thermal paste > reattach CPU cooler > all good?

Yes, that is all you have to do. Make sure to properly re apply your heatsink, here is a video about it:

USB 3.0 shows significantly higher transfer speeds, however you need a USB 3.0 capable case and device.

Its up to you if you want to use it or not, if you transfer a lot of files in large capacity then you should probably use it.

Good luck, and congratulations on your BIOS update.
