Ok so my friend has a dead laptop hard drive. He has gone out and got a new drive for the laptop, but does not know how to recover the data on the old drive to move it over. Is this possible or does he just have to do a new start on the new drive? Any help is welcome, Thanks.

Hey there,

Depending on how damaged is that HDD, you could either try and run chkdsk /r to recover any lost data in the bad clusters, connect externally the drive and see if you can read any of the data or simply attempt to do a backup. Another option is a data recovery company, but those tend to be very costly. What drive does your friend have and how did he determine that it is dead (tool, sounds)?
