Hey guys, I've been planning to build a rig for a while now, and I've finally decided on some of the components
( I5-4690k , GTX 970 G1 Gygabite Windforce etc.) It's not something special, but I think it's a decent build for my first rig.
The thing is I am scared it will not perform as well as I think it will, like I think it won't run the games that may come in 2015.
For the money I am spending on this build I could easily get both NEXT-GEN consoles, but I really wanna try and get a PC this time.
What I am asking for is if anyone out there has a build with similar components, and can tell me their performence in newer games, I would be extremly gratefull.

Also if you guys think I should change the CPU or if you can suggest a keyboard and mouse,  I'll be more than gratefull to hear your opinions.
Thanks.

:)

The thing about the consoles is that they're already lagging behind. I think the 970 will last a few years before requiring an upgrade(e.g. adding a second one, or getting a faster card). My specs are in my profile if you wanna take a look. I also have a 970 Windforce, and it's clocked at 1.44GHz on the Core.

Thank you so much, I've seen a lot of people showing their builds , and I just got scared my PC won't stand a chance, I am not planning in upgrading my rig in the next 2 years but you never know . Anyway thanks, Oh and btw what performance are you getting in games?

If I am reading this correctly you are missing;

PSU,

RAM,

Keyboard,

Mouse

I'm not convinced I would bother water cooling the rig unless you were planning on some extreme OC.

other than that the component selection looks pretty good

This rig will run games for the new few years easily, however if you want to run at max res with all graphics on max then yes there are games out now that will tax it.

My old GPU from 4 years ago would run any game that is out today, but if i maxed out the graphics the fps would drop a lot.

Consoles are a little different, the console is created and it will last 3-5 years, game makers create games to work with that hardware which means by the end of its life even new games will have 5 year old graphics being used on them.

I just ran a benchmark of Fire Strike(normal) and got this score. My res is 1080p.

Don't mind the 660 Ti. That's my folding card. (I also disabled Folding@home before benchmarking)

I've edited the link and now included a PSU and RAM (What do you think about them) , still can't decide for the mouse and the keyboard. Also I'm not too sure about the mic/headphone.

Thanks.

I can live with running the games with lower quality. Thanks for the help

Haven't runed to many benchmarks , but I'm considering that is a pretty good score?

Thanks a lot for taking your time and taking a screenshot.

Yup. Here are Guru3D's numbers for comparison.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_980_g1_gaming_review,21.html

They're running a 3960X @ 4.6GHz. That accounts for the overall score difference.

That's awesome. do you recomend the G1 Windforece or do you think there is a better non-reference card out for the 970?

Honestly, I'm happy with my card(I have the regular Windforce card). Temps are great. There are others out there, and I think ultimately, it comes down to personal preference and the type of build you want. (for example, ASUS has cards that use a single eight pin power connector)

What program did you use to benchmark?

Taking a closer look, I would go for a cheaper display I personally don't know anyone that can tell any difference between 100hz and 144 but you pay a LOT more for it.

I would also go for 16GB RAM rather than 8GB

Mice, Personally I like the Razor Naga and its variants, but its personal taste at the end of the day.

Keyboard, I used to run a G19 but Ive recently dropped in a QPAD mechanical keyboard that does take a bit of getting used to but it is very nice and less breakable than the G19

Mic/Headphones,  Ive got some G930 logitech headphones, but they have an annoying delay in the wireless. Mic Ive never tried a good usb Mic, personally I use a Rode NT1-A with a Behringer Xenyx 802 and a Behringer Ultra-Curve Pro EQ, sound card I go with a Asus Xonar Essence STX which seems very clean and has decent input/outputs. plugged into a Quad Elite integrated amp into some Quad 12L2 speakers. Perhaps overkill for most people.

I am however in the market for some new headphones (wired this time) so I can keep my game sound separated from voice, I do love the Stax headphones but they are not appropriate for recording as they leak too much sound.

I would however say I wouldn't spend 150-200$ on mic and headphones without a dedicated sound card

Your still not selling me on the water cooled cpu :)

Oh, just one more thing I was gonna add. Will this computer be able to run GTA V / AC Unity/ The crew?

At 1080p, for sure. The 970 and CPU you've chosen should be great at 1080p for a while, and you can always turn down some graphics parameters you don't really care about in the future. You've made good choices for gaming, now you can stop worrying about the CPU and GPU and focus on the other aspects of your build. Is there anything else you're curious about or need help with?

Edit: I looked over your full build. What are you going to be using the headphones and microphone for? Those prices seem a little high to me. There are probably better headphones options at that price point, but it all depends on if you're getting an amp or DAC/mixer or anything like that, and if they will be used for mostly gaming, or music.

Ahhh, the headphones. I want great quality because I am thinking of making some YouTube content in the near future. That made me think I need 16 GB/s of RAM.

And I still haven't decided on the mouse and keyboard.

Oh by any chance, do you think it is worth upgrading the CPU to a i7-4790k

I will be watercooling my new rig next year, but I do plan some monster OCs.

CPU wise, the i7 you listed is better than the i5, at roughly a scaleable cost/performance, you can always pay for better, however I don't think you will notice the difference in games, unless you are running benchmark tests.

Won't care about benchmarks, will it help in video editing / rendering?

Wish you luck with your water cooled rig brudah

Thanks so much for the help.

In your case, I don't think I'd recommend a 4790K. The i5 should be fine. 16GB RAM is a good choice if you plan on doing video and audio recording and editing.

As far as the headphones go, I suggest getting some kind of studio monitor style headphones, so that you can equalize and level everything you're recording to sound normal for most people(for instance, if you have a pair of headphones with boosted low midrange, when it sounds fine in your headphones, the sound of your voice will be slightly muted for people with a leveled midrange(so, their speakers or headphones).

Another way to explain it is by just using the equalizer in your music listening software. Listen to something with a flat EQ, then listen to it again with the bass and treble boosted. This is essentially the kind of difference you can expect out of various types of headphones. This also means that you can use an equalizer to compensate for a messed up response curve, but that's more complicated.

Anyway, I suggest looking at the Beyerdynamic DT-770(32 Ohm or 80 Ohm version if you won't have an amp) or the AKG K550. These are both well regarded headphones, very easy to listen to for music, while still maintaining relative tonal neutrality.

They're slightly more expensive, but you could get away with a cheaper microphone. You won't need a $200 microphone for standard YouTube videos, at least not starting out. Maybe try a Blue Yeti or similarly priced Audio-Technica/Shure microphone. And if you want them to match, Shure's SRH840 headphone is very flat tonally(almost too cold for music, so you can use the equalizer there).

That sounds great man, thanks for the advice.

I went so overkill for the audio because I had very bad luck with my previous headsets.

I had 3 pairs of Afterglow headsets [ The mic is terrible on those btw( and they  are actually pretty expensive $140-160 AUD)] and they all broke in a year, than i bought a Razor Kraken , and that was DOA, so I ended up exchanging that with a Z300 Turtle Beaches and they aren't performing at a $200 level , very disappointment.

Sorry about that long as history, but I guess that's why I decided to get a separate mic and headset.

Thanks a lot for the help, really appreciate it.

Yep, gaming headsets aren't really good for much other than gaming. The microphone is really only usable for simple chat, and every Turtle Beach I've messed with has had issues(I don't really mess with gaming headsets much, but I've had experience with three different Turtle Beaches, some of the Sony branded PS3 ones, and the Plantronics RIG which I'm using for my PS3 now).

I'm glad I could help. There's always the option of getting a regular pair of headphones and attaching a boom mic(like the Mod Mic) and using it as a headset that way. Standalone desktop microphones will be miles ahead here, though.
