I am confused about a few points on choosing my memory. First of all when my motherboard can for example run at 2400Mhz, but only overclocked. Does this mean i have to buy 1600Mhz memory and than overclock the memory to 2400Mhz, or can I buy 2400Mhz memory and "overclock" the mother board? Second of all can i buy a single stick of 8gb memory and up grade to another one later if i have a dual channel motherboard, or do I have to buy both sticks of memory in a single package?

What they mean by "overclocked" is that RAM higher than 1600Mhz is factory overclocked.  All you need to do is enable XMP in the BIOS and it runs at the rated speed.

What motherboard do you have?

Yes, you can buy a single 8GB stick if you are limited on DIMMs, but if you decide to upgrade in the future, you will need to buy the exact same stick of RAM to avoid potential complications.  It is possible to mix and match RAM, but it is not always smooth sailing.

Thank you very much this has answered all of my questions. My planned mother board is ROG maximus impact VII

That motherboard will work fine.

Ram isn't inherently any speed. Any ram that isn't the motherboard' particular 'default speed' (in this case, 1333mhz) is oc'ed. The specifications on ram kits are just the what's guaranteed to work using those sticks with the specified settings.

Might I recommend a less expensive, yet same performance motherboard?  RoG gaming motherboards are very expensive, and don't offer anything really beneficial to warranty the high price tag, other than slick looks.

What is the purpose of your build?  Overall budget, and location?  Might be able to get you a better computer if you are willing to make some changes.  Unless you are flush with cash and money is of no object, then by all means go for the RoG motherboard!
