Back up your data ASAP.

What brand HDD is it? I would suggest finding a diagnostic tool made by that company, made specifically for that brand of drives and scanning it with that.

Could be nothing, but it could be something. I know WD, Seagate, Toshiba, and Hitachi all make their own diagnostic tools. That will give you a better idea where you stand.

recently done a hdd check with crystal disk info and my current hdd came up caution c5?

Hey gampla,

I would download WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and run both the quick and the extended tests to check the drive's S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors that might have occurred (here's a link: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810〈=en). Did you do the chkdsk /r check? If that returned a result that there are errors on the disk, this probably means that there are bad sectors forming on it and you should back up your data as soon as possible and think of replacing the drive.

I've done it and it's says my hdd has an error is there a test I can do to see if my os also has an error?

What error does it show? I recommend backing up your whole drive to make sure your data stays intact.
If the error happens to be on a spot where part of your OS is written, most likely your OS will also produce an error.
Did you use WD DLGD to do the check? Can you post the results?

You don't need a WD drive. The tool works with other drives as well.

Not good. I would totally back up the complete drive and reformat it. That might hold off disaster while you get a replacement. I would recommend a 512gb MX100 ssd for the laptop. You'll gain speed, extend the life of the laptop and increase the robustness of everything.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

That's why I said to reformat while you save up for the ssd. A 512 MX100 is only 150 quid and that would be enough to extend your laptop for a couple of years. I would be cloning the drive from your backup which would  bring along the O/S. When you get a new system, bring along the ssd from the laptop. Win/win. If you can cram what you have onto a 256gb then the MX100 is only 75 quid which is well within your budget.

I wouldn't get a new hdd for the laptop. The Toshiba is old. Even replacing the hdd you still have an old battery and all the other subsystems which will be failing more sooner than later, unfortunately. Nature of the beast. Good money after bad in this case. How do I justify an ssd then? It's such an upgrade that you ease the load on the battery, it will improve the performance even though it's only SATA II, and it increases the robustness of a laptop. That makes it worth the upgrade headache. And it's easily brought forward to your new machine at a later date.

It seems that your drive has too many bad sectors for the program to evaluate it as functional. This means your data is at big risk and I would recommend you do a full backup of all the data on that drive as it might fail very soon. You would need to replace that drive. You could run CHKDSK /r from the CMD for Windows to try to isolate the bad sectors and retrieve any lost information from the bad clusters and prolong the drive's life a bit but I wouldn't count on that drive for any data.

I have a suggestion for you, if don't want extra hdd for your system. You can simply use the software CloudBacko, which is free of cost and combining free cloud storages available from Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox into a single large storage.
