How do I set up a Minecraft server?

I just need help setting up a basic Minecraft server just so I can have some people help me build my little suburban neighborhood. What are some minimum specs I need? (my system specs are in my sig, so yeah) If you wanna know what I'm doing, it's just a suburban neighborhood I called Suburbia. If you want, here are some screenshots of a part of it (only had time to finish one house ATM.

I remember my bro running one over LogMeInHamachi, but that was only for 2 players, and was still a bit laggy... Then again, he had a BAAAD computer back then, so your mileage might vary.

I'll have to look around, see what's best  :P

If I had Minecraft, I'd be glad to help, but I don't sadly...

I hate to be the guy who says this but, there are hundreds of youtube videos on this. I only say because its probably easier to watch and listen rather than interpret a 20 point list on a forum. That said its all most as easy as downloading the file and pressing run, but not quite. Its Port forwarding that gives people the most trouble, and most popular routers have videos on how to, and if Im not mistaken there is site that tells you how to PF on almost every router.

You should have enough power but that depends on how many players, Vanilla typically isn't too bad. Its always about Internet connection though.

I highly doubt that you won't get anywhere because of your crappy internet and you only have 4GB of ram......

http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Server/Requirements

http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/

I might get 8GB of ram. But surprisingly, my ping is low.

simplest method would be go to netherbyte.com grab whatever server package you can afford, but the cheapest one should work fine just to have your friends help you out.

Is it bad that my dream setup only costs a few thousand not counting the obutto?

1-4 people. 500MB RAM. (For the server, without mods)

At least 10Mb/s.

4 cores. 3.2GHz+

SSD if possible.

Don't use LogMeIn.

The ping is low, but the speed sucks

Much cheaper to host it yourself.

It is cheaper. I personally run my 20slot public server from home. But i also invested ALOT of time, and I paid for WAY better internet. close to 80up and down. But 4bucks a month is NOT that bad for a no hassle way.

I ran a 40 slot with 25Mb/s. And I can set up a Bukkit (With about 10 plugins and the permissions file) server in about 10 minutes.

Paid for hosting usually rips you off in some way. But if you can't get better internet, then that will have to do.

Thats great till some dirtbag comes and DOSes you. would take them 2 minutes to make your 10 minutes worthless. And Although if you don't do your research you could get ripped off, netherbyte is one of the most widely used hosting companies.

I have had 2 attempted DDOs attacks. I have 60MB/s and my router just died (It runs out of RAM) so that went well.

Good DDOs protection, not enough router RAM.

Sooo it takes them 5 instead of 2. IMHO go with a hosting company like netherbyte. You won't be able to handle more than 2 people without lag with that upload/download, and theres alot less to worry about.

I don't plan to build a full out town, just a little neighborhood. It might take a couple months. My internet contract expires in February.

Sorry I couldn't be as helpful as You hoped.

I don't feel like paying to host. I'd rather host myself for free, but the issue is the shitty internet i'm stuck with.

Exactly. There is nothing you can do about your internet. I hate spending money, But there is a point when you have to. Get hosting, or live with a very crappy server. I don't even think it will be playable.
