I plan on upgrading my GPU and monitor for black Friday.  I currently have a 650 Ti Boost so I think its time.  Still not sure on either.  Been looking at the 970/980 GTX, but I don't know if I should go bigger.  I'm considering doing dual monitors in the future so keep that in mind, but I honestly don't even know if multi monitor setups are even worth the hassle now with the way monitor designs are going. For now I will probably just get 1 monitor (Rog Swift TN or LG curved IPS once it gets a Vesa mount option.  Already have a 70"HDTV for media and controller required gaming.)  Primary use is gaming and movies, mainly gaming.  Would like to keep it under 1000$ for the GPU(s).

Thanks.

Agreed I am also looking to buy one of these two GPUs when I see a good deal.

Also , i would recommend that ASUS swift monitor. 144Hz is amazing and @ 1440P? You can't go wrong with that. And especially when it is powered by a GTX 980.

For single monitor 1080p gaming the 970 is way more than enough. To leverage that extra power a 120hz+(like the swift) or a high resolution monitor is necessary. High refresh rate monitors are great for a competitive edge in shooters and other twitch games. High resolution and IPS monitors look pretty. Dual monitors aren't great for gaming because the bezel is in the center however, a second monitor can be good for other applications while gaming. Getting a solid primary monitor, a GPU that can drive it and keeping your old monitor as a secondary monitor would be my choice. It really comes down to what you plan to do with it and what features you prefer.

I hope you get something you like.

I agree 100%, only way I would get a 3 monitor set up is if I had the smallest bezels in the world on my monitor, otherwise I can't stand it.  The thing is though, I don't really play many FPS anymore.  Only one I really still play on a regular basis is TF2.  Otherwise I jump all over, currently I play smite, Evil Within, Lords of the fallen, Evolve, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, etc...  Still a good idea on the 970 and Swift knowing that? Or am I better off getting a big IPS with a 970 or something else?

Oh and I'll probably scrap this junky viewsonic I've had for years, its falling apart.  If I get a 2nd monitor for applications I'll just get a cheap one.  But then again I can always use the 70" for applications if need be.

Thanks again.

If refresh rate isn't your thing than an IPS and/or a 1440p monitor would be for you. The swift is 1440p however, the 144hz refresh rate and g-sync adds to the price. As for the 970 it would really depend on your current GPU, if it can run the games you want with good fps at the resolution you want than keep it. If you want higher frames per second the 970 is a beast with good value.

No problem.

Hey, I wanna build my first pc, I was hoping that the black friday would help me save money, since I am on a budget. Does someone knows how much do prices really change for black friday (specifically on bestbuy)?

And since I am still learning, any comments on this $650 pc build, if so, feel free to reply with your suggestions, thank you.

I want a pc that can game really well, but that will still work in the near future (2-3 years), taking that in mind, I really appreciate any comments.

Okay, last question then.  Do you think I will notice the benefits of the 144hz refresh rate on the Swift in the type of games I currently play.  Or to put more simply, is it only noticeable in FPS games (BF4, CoD, maybe Borderlands)?

Get a GTX 980 for sure. The STRIX from ASUS and the WINDFORCE from Gigabyte are the best versions.

 agreed

a single GTX 970 or 980 can't power a 144hz panel tho; he will need SLI for that display.

I use a 144hz monitor myself and when I first made the switch I didn't notice a difference however, now it is irritating to play at 60hz. IMO for the games you play and videos an IPS monitor would me a more noticeable improvement than a 144hz one.

Going from 60hz to 144hz is the biggest and most noticeable upgrade I have ever done. More significant of an upgrade than going from 1080->1440p, imo. Things are just way smoother now, and when first person games start going really fast it is much easier to pay attention to what is really going on. I can't go back to 60hz now. But I have noticed I am very sensitive to fps and such, others are not. I can even notice the increased refresh rate just by using the desktop.

I agree 144hz is a better upgrade than 1440p. Any thing <24 inches is great at 1080. However IPS is very nice and for movies and such 144hz is no better than 30hz.
