cpu power

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

kk thx, should i try for 5 with out increasing the power?

you can always try but there is no magic...that's why AMD bins the chips now and sell the 1.5v 5GHZ capable CPU as FX-9590...unfortunately. Anyways...above 4ghz diminishing returns in terms of performance also kicks in and with syntetic benchmark you come to realise that increasing frequencies past that point results in only very slight performance increase...every CPU architecture has a sweet spot where if you go higher it's fine but you don,t get that much more performance out of it and for AMD piledriver my own testing demonstrated that 4ghz is about the sweet spot so i'd suggest you just call it day a before you fry or reduce your cpu's lifespan.

EDIT: hummm...also looking at your profile i come to realise that you are using a very poor 970 chipset motherboard that could give way any second at anything higher than 1.4v...so i strongly suggest dialing that thing back down...

I am runnig  a fx 8320 and i want to get it up to 5ghz but what is the max power i should put in to it before it is unsafe

whats holding it back the max voltage

at some point in the journey to higher frequencies diminishing returns kicks in and your CPU won't take no more unless you throw massively more volts to it and it will still be unstable and degrade very quickly...as the others mentionned already 1.5v is really the MAXiMUM you want to go for 24/7 use on these things and this is PROVIDED you have sufficient cooling.

If you don't want your CPU dying pre-maturely or generally wearing out much quicker, just turn voltage and clock speed down. You don't need 5GHz or even 4.7 on your 8320. The 9590 is 5GHz and it has a whopping TDP of 220W. That's a lot more work for both your cooler and motherboard VRMs

If you can get it stable at 5GHz at 1.55V then you could, but no higher voltage then that unless you want to fry your CPU and/or VRMs. It's already over what's an acceptable voltage for an everyday use PC.

Personally I would not push it any further then 1.45V on that motherboard. It only has a 4+1 power phase design and was not designed for high overclocking

the power delivery on it is indeed weak...it will work just fine as long as it will work...VRM failure on the motherboard will kill the mortherboard and risk taking away your CPU as well.

some 970 chipset motherboard with more power phases and better heatsinked VRM's and mosfets (Gigabyte 970A-UD3P or ASUS m5A97 EVO) and most 990FX motherboard have more powerphases...the gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 and ASUS M5A99FX PRO are the usual ''go to'' board but the best of all are the asus crosshair formula i believe and the sabertooth 990FX

All these boards are not worth your time and money as mentionned already AMD performance is nothing groundbreaking and a simple core i5 under an intel heatsink on a cheap 40$ H81 motherboard will offer better performance in most circumstances.
