I was hoping for this, I'm on a really tight budget and unless there is something else in a similar price range out there that can do a better job I can't go for a much higher end CPU.

Will pairing an X4 CPU with a GTX 970 cause any problems?

No, it won't cause any problems besides some bottlenecking here and there, but games will still be playable.
