Not that I have ever heard of. What's your issue? Too high of a bitrate for streaming? Too much space taken up with index files?

I have a really slow upload speed on my host computer/laptop. I'm trying to use gzip to hopefully increase the loading time of the site.

What the hey....

Unfortunately, once you reach a sizable enough library, there are certain minimum network requirements for your host machine (just like any other type of server). I guess you could try removing things like album artwork, trailers, thumbnails, etc and see if that improves your speed at all. Unless there's a way to enable compression for all your outbound traffic from that host machine, that kind of functionality was just never incorporated with plex and it probably isn't feasible.

I hear you loud and clear my 6TB plex server totally isn't full of 70% anime.... I'd say the most popular alternative to Plex would be XBMC. I understand that it has had some major updates in the last little while, although I still consider Plex superior for multiple reasons (device compatibility, ease of use, and design to name a few). Remember, Plex was an offshoot of XBMC.

That said, I've still never seen anything about it supporting compression either.

It does require a PlexPass membership, but for the longest time I would sync shows to my phone at home with their android app and watch them on the go while at school. That way I bypassed any slow connections but maintained the convenience of an ordered Plex library.

It's odd how all the people I know who love anime also have a compulsion to save all of it, even if you probably won't re-watch it for years, if ever. One day a friend might just really need to watch DxD again or laugh at Nyaruko-san  -_-.

I actually re-watch some of them since it's fun xD and sometimes when my net crashes I can just watch anime.

There's some solid stuff that's airing right now too. Akame ga Kill is kind of my guilty vice right now.

My roommate keeps trying to spoil everything (he read the manga). Anyway, sorry I couldn't help you with the Plex issue! Feel free to PM me if you have any other related questions.
