Intel CPU Generation Question

I was wondering how Haswell is 4th gen because surely it should be 6th gen?

 

I thought the 1st gen Core's were 65nm in 2006 with the very first Core 2 Duo's, the Core 2 Duo T8100 I have in my laptop is the mobile version of Wolfdale which is Penryn and that is 45nm so in theory that should be 2nd gen.

 

How did Intel decide that Nehalem was the 1st, Sandy Bridge 2nd, Ivy Bridge 3rd and so on, I'm confused.

Only count the core i3, i5, i7 generations its 4th gen of that.

Only count the core i3, i5, i7 generations its 4th gen of that.

 

But the Pentium and Celeron's will also be 4th gen when they are released but what I don't understand is how that came to be the 4th gen, why isn't the old Core 2's counted because aren't they also Core's as well (not just in name).

Again count only the i3, i5, i7 Naming scheme if you want technical generation it would be 24th gen CPU lol.
