So why do laptop GPU's tend to have more ram then there desktop counterparts? Like the AORUS X3 has 6 gb of on a 870m, as the closest thing to that would be a 970 and that has half the ram! Some people say that it is for the high resolution screen, but desktop users could have higher resolution screens. So why are we left with the smaller frame buffer?

the power of a 970 desktop gpu is still superior, dont worry my lad + the gap between performance with the maxwell notebook gpu's are really small and close to the desktop gpu's at the same time that theyre using less power and outputting less heat, impressive to say the least.

Laptops usually come with a higher resolution screen, while since many MGPUs aren't upgradeable it is for the sakes of "future proofing".

I really just think of it as a marketing gimmick.

The average consumer won't know better except for the letters and numbers.

Its marketing bullshit. You think that a 870m could utilize that much ram?  Makes people think it is better when in reality it isn't.

GTX970 is twice as powerful compare to GTX870M.

Those extra VRAM was mostly for marketing gimmicks. I'm sure it won't even use more than 2GB on most games.
