sounds like it partitioned a huge section to the OS. Attatch the Pi to a monitor and explore the card there. It's possible that the 55.9MB is only available as a plug and play device and the rest of the free space is dedicated to Raspbian

That happens sometimes. The easiest solution to this would be to put the sd card into a digital camera, and let it format the card. You can also do that on your computer, but it is going to be a bit harder
