Before I start I didn't see any other threats about this problem so if there is one just link me to it.

The problem:

My friends computer I'm helping with comes up with "preparing automatic repair' and just stays on this. Sometimes it gets past and just stays on 'diagnosing your PC'. I have tried to find a way around it but nothing so far has worked. (Cant find boot to safe mode and just did the general blow dust out and clean ram with lint free cloth).

Any suggestions?

Its a laptop so when I hold the power button it powers down

if you don't have 8.1 update installed right sid echarms bar settings and restart + shift

if you do open the stasrt screen hold shift hit the power button icon and restart

Pressing F8 didn't do anything unfortunately. I have looked a guides online and it says that that feature was removed in W8. I ended up just calling a favour from someone I know who's knowledge is far greater than mine.

Thanks for all your help though :)

No when you hold shift and restart you aren't supposed to hit the power button.

You're supposed to go to the windows 8 start screen hit the power options button at the top right of the screen and then while holding shift click restart. Once it restarts there should be a load of options and one of them will allow you to enter safe mode.

He can't boot to the OS.
