I'm done with my two-year-old iPhone 4, done with iOS as a whole, and not interested in upgrading to the iPhone 5 at all. The Galaxy S3 looks like the best Android phone out right now, but I'm willing to put up with my current phone for a fair while for any future releases. Are there any Android phones coming out in the somewhat-near future that are worth looking out for? I've heard rumors that the Galaxy S4 will be announced mid-2013 -- anything before then?

Thanks for any replies, guys.

Don't really have a budget per se... if MWC weren't just around the corner, I'd be looking at the S3 or Razr Maxx HD I guess. Under 5 inches?

Ideally I'd get a Nexus 4, but even if they were in stock anywhere I couldn't use it on Verizon.

Your priority should be

RAM,

Screen,

CPU & GPU

and after that I guess you can choose what you want. RAM is very important, since that is what usually keeps your Android device from being updated, the screen comes before CPU and GPU because most android phones with 720p and above screens have pretty good processing power and who wants a quad core or an octa core processor with a 480x800 screen...

Well on Verizon if you're willing to get include the Droid DNA that's a pretty powerful phone with amazing screen, only problems are the battery is only average and lack of expandable storage. Sadly if you don't like the 5" screen size, you probably won't be seeing many flagship phones be smaller. Thank the bigger is better trend :/.

The only 2 that seem to stand out so far are the Galaxy S4 and the Xperia Z.

Don't expect any decent phones announced in MWC, most manufacturers are having separate events. Rumors are, the Galaxy S IV and HTC M7 (the codename for whatever the next flagship from HTC will be called) should be out earlier than previously expected (possibly late April for the S IV, based on rumors) so you should wait for those. I'm personally a fan of Nexus phones but Galaxy S series get so much developer support I'm already running Android 4.2.1 on my Galaxy S II (w/ stock UI) via a custom ROM, so updates aren't really much of an issue.

The new oppo find 5 looks very promising, although a relatively unknown brand.

The spec sheet and also the reviews I've read seem really positive.

Although it's a 5 inch phone which you may not be interested in.

5 Inch phones with 1080p screens are the current trend.

If anything look at the nexus 4 or the galaxy s4 are your best bets

I strongly recommend you try the Galaxy Note II. You mentioned you want a screen-size under 5 inches, (And the Note II must sound huge to you) but I think if you give it a shot you'd like the extra productivity you get out of it.
