How does this weird performance work?

As you know trine 1 and 2 is free for the weekend. So i downloaded it and played Trine 1. I got 35fps.

Then I go to play Trine 2 and I got 80ish fps. How does this work? Is it just fraps being wonky or something

Trine 1 actually got an update a few weeks/months ago that basically recreated the game in the Trine 2 engine. I believe its available to all versions of the game.

You could try both engines since I believe they left the original as an option, but if Trine 2 works fine I doubt think the engine is the issue. I'd try verifying the game files in Steam, and check your driver profile for Trine 1 for any errant settings.

In the Nvidia Control Panel, check Manage 3D Settings > Program Settings, and see if Trine (1) is in there. If so, check that its settings are set to "Use global setting." It's really just a suggestion for the sake of completeness, though... if you haven't changed anything yourself, it should already be set to defaults and Trine may not even appear in the list.

But for future reference, this is where you can go to force various settings at the driver-level, if you find yourself needing to. Often, older games need more AA and anisotrophic filtering than what they support natively.
