okay gentlemen, I'm new to this community and have never custom built a pc before, however i am a quick learner and only have a few questions.

i am tired of 1080p graphics and seeing that 4k is the new up and comer, id like to build a pc that can handle decent 4k. mind you, it doesn't have to be a phenomenal system that runs everything at 70+ fps. 40-60 fps is fine for me. having said that i am looking looking at a couple components and would like to know if what I'm asking for is feasible:

CPU: intel 4790k

MOBO: asus maximus hero vii

GPU: ROG poseidon 780 x 2 in SLI

RAM: corsair vengeance 1600mhz 8GB x2

PSU: corsair hx 850 (enough power?)

Cooling: swiftech 220-x

SSD: intel 730 240GB

HDD: WD black 3tb

CASE: corsair graphite 760t

i know this will cost a little over 2k with all these components and I'm looking at an asus 4k monitor along with corsair rgb mech keyboard and razer mouse in addition. cost isn't super important but i don't want to pay 5k if i don't have to.

what do you guys think? is this reasonable? any revisions i should make? anything not compatible?

please let me know! :)

3 wastes of money.

Get MSI Z97 G45 Gaming for motherboard

Get two Gigabyte GTX 970s or 980s for graphics cards

Get a cheaper SSD, doesn't really matter which one as long as it's not Kingston V300, but I'd recommend the ADATA SP900 or Intel 530.

PSU: corsair hx 850 (enough power?)

Get EVGA 750 G2. Much better quality PSU for a similar price if not cheaper.

Welcome to Linus Tech Tips btw :)

why thank you! also, given the incrementally better on board audio, is an additional sound card really necessary these days? will that on board be sufficient for say surround sound gaming?

Nope, with a higher end board like the MSI I suggested, a sound card will barely make a perceivable difference when it comes to audio, definitely not enough of a difference to justify the cost. Surround sound gaming will be perfectly fine off onboard.

right now I'm deployed but I'm coming home soon, ( so-cal) and I've saved up enough this past year to want to go not quite all out but close enough lol

We do gladly thank you for your service, sir.

If you want to save a bit of money change these.

The Mobo: The ROG series is over priced, don't get me wrong the boards are great but over priced. MSI have some cheaper boards.

GPU: Go for two 970/980's More efficient and more powerful and they overclock better.

PSU: The HX is a tier 3 supply. I'd recommend looking at the following supplies: EVGA G2, superflower golden king, XFX black edition (XTR), Corsair AX, Seasonic X and NZXT Hale. Those supplies are tier 1 supplies, the VERY BEST supplies around, and they are all some of the highest quality supplies you'll find. You don't want to cheap out on your power supply.

SSD: Lets just say Intel isn't known for pricing their products... Effectively. Any SSD will do, just do a bit of research before you buy you don't want to be buying a SSD with a bad NAND.

Ok just wanted to make sure what currency you were working with  :)

I would look at a GTX 970 over the 780. They use less power, and are not far off 780ti speeds.

The EVGA G2 as mentioned above is one of the best on the market for price/performance. Plus you get a pretty awesome 10 year warranty.

A Crucial MX100 SSD should be cheaper than the Intel one. They are a very good for the price.

You can save nearly $80 by getting a Seagate Barracuda HDD.

i don't have a monitor as of late, thats because if what i wanted wasn't feasible for my price range, i wasn't going to bother with 4k

what wattage should i get for the psu? also i plan for expansion some point in time(custom water cooling setup instead of an AIO) and future gadgets and peripherals of that nature..

For GTX 970 SLI then a 750W is fine. Something like the EVGA Supernova G2 750W would be my choice.
