Hey guys, I posted this build a little while ago but I updated it and I'd love some opinions. This is for gaming and possibly various other uses, and I know I can get an OS for free from family. Thanks!

From your PB family? :P

Just kidding, looks like a nice rig. A 4690K is more than enough for gaming though.

you dont need an I7 for gaming its overkill and over priced unless you are doing work station stuff like 3d rendering and such

corsair 600t, msi z87-g45, intel 4770k, 16g patriot viper low-pro ram, asus direct cu2 780, crucial 256gig ssd, seagate baracuda 1tb,

Does this look better? I thought hyperthreading was important for cpu performance, am I wrong?

It's important for certain applications, but gaming is not one of them.

I didn't see an aftermarket cooler in there, if you're going to buy an over-clocking CPU and motherboard, I would HIGHLY recommend picking up some aftermarket cooling like a CM 212 Evo for about $30.

Is the budget $1500?

My plan was to use the stock cooler and get a water cooler later on. Would this be a bad idea? Yes, the budget is 1500$ max with everything but an OS.

No worries then, not a bad idea at all. That's pretty well balanced.

If you have a spare monitor maybe you can hold off for a little while, save up and grab a G-Sync monitor, even 80-90FPS on those look like absolute butter, meaning you can max out games and still have better than average frame rates on that 970.  But other than that, great build.

I plan to get this around Christmas this year as my bday and Christmas are then (i'm 14). Do you think that a gsync monitor will be more affordable by then?

A HUGE reason I chose the monitor is because it is compatible with the gsync DIY kits, so I could mod it later

By christmas? Definitely not unless you get one in a huge sale, about this time next year? Probably, and whenever this freesync stuff from AMD is released I think another drop will occur. Monitor prices are fairly stagnant over the years tbh.

The cheapest one I know of is this AOC one http://us.aoc.com/monitor_displays/g2460pg

It is $449 from a place called Micro Centre, but I can't find it on their website so they musn't have released it there yet.

Great build. But get an i5 4690k. That's all you really need. Hell I can play most games just fine on a 2.8ghz phenom ii x4 830, a 4690k would be badass. 4 cores is all you need.

Eric S. Raymond used an E6600 from 2005 until 12/30/14 or open source software creation. Raw data computations in excess of 18GB each. Core 2 Duos still have tons of life left, my friend.

I added the 4690k, thanks!

No problem. With that hella nice cooler added, you can overclock the balls off of that thing. I wish you luck in the silicon lottery known as Intel Overclocking!
