770 might not run it perfectly smooth on ultra as it would 1080p but yeah, 1440p is the new standard imho.

New gtx 970 for example will run 1440p butterly smooth on almost every game. So with the next series even the cheaper x60 card will be able to run it so you can probably game on 1440p with a ~200€ card, which is pretty nice!

If I were to get a 1440p monitor, could I set the resolution to 1080p and use 1440p when I get a beefier gpu next generation?

i dont think it'll scale with 1080p but you could just set the games to medium-high and not ultra or lower the AA and you are good. Always keep on native res if possible! :)

Running a monitor at the wrong resolution can make it look blurry..

To be honest, a 770 isn't bad for 1440p, you'll just have to find the proper balance of graphics settings that will give you a comfortable framerate.. You obviously won't be able to max out the most demanding games, but you definitely will be able to play anything you want.. Medium settings @ 1440p is going to look sharper than Ultra @ 1080p.

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

Won't be buttery smooth for long, by the end of the year he would barely get 60fps on most triple A titles without lowering the settings, much better off getting a GTX 980

Or waiting until it gets unbearable for him and then either buy a second 970 or upgrade to a new gpu if one's out by then.
