Hey please help me!

I recently build a desktop my self, and it just randomly freezes sometimes, i cant even move the mouse and i have to shut down using the power button. I did accidentally bend a pin on the cpu while putting it on, but i bent it back into place, and the computer runs. could this the the problem? or is it something else. is there anyway I could confirm that's its actually my cpu? cause the computer seems to be working fine most of the time. any help would be helpful thank you!

It sounds like it's either your storage, your RAM, or your CPU. In this case I think it's your CPU because you bent one of your pins.

Try downloading RAM-testing software to rule that out.

Try installing windows on your 1TB drive and run it to rule that out.

If this fails it's probably your CPU

Sounds like a storage issue to me.

Test it with a Ram stick at a time on different slots.

If the removal of a ram module solves the problem, the ram is defect.

If the change of the ram slot solves the issue, your motherboard is damaged, but you can still use the other slots.

But first make sure it is not your GPU driver crashing or something.

Install the newest or in cause you already have the newest, install the one before that.

Also when it freezes, does music/gamesound continue to play?

Hey there nishij,

Welcome to Linus Tech Tips forum. :)

As the guys mentioned, this sounds like a hardware problem, most probably connected to the storage, memory or the processor.

Going from the easiest thing, you could download WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and run both quick and extended tests to see if the problem is with the HDD (here's a link: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810〈=en). Also, you could run a chkdsk /r from the CMD to check if and how many bad sectors have appeared on the HDD are possibly relocate any info from them.

If that doesn't turn out to be the problem, try removing, swapping around and running your build with one RAM stick at a time. This should rule out any problem with the memory.

If any of the problems persists, try running a run-in test from the BIOS, which would test the CPU, RAM and HDD for any possible errors.

Another possible solution to identify the problem would be getting a benchmark program for the CPU, RAM and HDD which would put them under continuous tests and you can observe how they perform. Any extraordinary up/down spikes should indicate where the problem might be.

Keep us posted on how this is resolving,

Hey Guys thanks for such quick replies, before I try all the solutions listed above. I realized today that it pretty much only happens when im watching online videos. Facebook, youtube, espn videos. So could this mean that its a software problem? and I have upgraded all my drivers to latest ones. and also I did check the temperatures of my cpu and gpu both around or below 40degrees.

pretty much any web player, oh and im using Google chrome. Works fine if I watch videos that I already say on vlc player.

Hey again :)

Since that's the case, have you tried watching videos from other browsers to see if the problem persists? (i.e. Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, etc.)
